The AMX ELC bis is a French tier 5 light tank.

Developed from 1957 through 1961 to provide French airborne troops with an air-transportable vehicle that could engage heavy tanks. The vehicle mounted a 90-mm gun and had a very low silhouette. The two crew members were seated in the turret, which could turn through 360 degrees, but only when the vehicle was not moving. Variants with different guns were planned. Only one prototype was manufactured. The vehicle never saw service.

The ELC AMX represents a rather dramatic reversal in French tank design philosophy. While the AMX 40 and prior tanks were slow, with weak guns, and heavily armored, the ELC is fast, well armed and lightly armored. While it has laughable armor, it is very fast and quite maneuverable and its high damage, high penetration 90mm gun makes it an awesome hit and run vehicle. Unlike most lights, however, it does not have a fully rotating turret, meaning circling enemies is much more difficult. It is very light and has a good engine, giving it amazing acceleration, with 37hp/t, and has no problem reaching its top speed of 65km/h and maintaining it. Use your maneuverability to your advantage, even if your turret can`t traverse all the way, you can still perform flanking maneuvers. Even if you survive a shot from an enemy tank, chances are, your tracks or engines are heavily damaged, your duty as a scout will end. Keep in mind, that even if your traverse modules are damaged, you can still become support, and in some (but not all) cases, flank (due to your high penetration on your top gun and your camo value.)

The ELC AMX is preceded by the AMX 40.

The AMX ELC bis leads to the AMX 12 t, and the Panhard AMD 178B.

Pros and Cons

Pros:


  • Incredible mobility with amazing pw/wt ratio
  • Strong weapon 'hard' statistics: very high penetration and damage, and decent fully aimed accuracy
  • Very low silhouette
  • Extremely good camouflage value
  • Extremely high APCR penetration


Cons:


  • Very poor protection and HP
  • Extremely limited traverse arc/depression
  • Poor view/signal range
  • Low sustained damage output, very poor accuracy while on the move and poor aim time
  • Cannot fully rotate turret and near-impossible to flip right-side up when flipped over


Performance

Everything you've come to know about French tanks changes with this vehicle. You'll have to forget about the armor of the AMX 40, but for the first time you'll be able to move at high speed and use a great gun. In fact the ELC AMX has the highest damage and penetration of all tier 5s (excluding tank destroyers). Its ability to flank is limited because of its lack of a fully rotatable turret. The powerful derp of the 90mm gun is also limited by the excruciating aim time and slow reload. It also has a typically French poor gun depression and elevation, limiting the value as a sniping gun. Therefore, it is best used as a pure hit-and-run tank, almost flying into to an unsuspecting tank and firing when it is almost impossible to miss before fleeing away to reload and go for another pass. Never stop moving, for a stationary ELC is a dead ELC.

The 90mm cannon in its pseudo-turret allow it to challenge most heavy tanks from all angles, but also means that the ELC is ill-suited to challenging other light tanks in anything less than ideal conditions due to the fact the turret has worse traverse than many non-turreted TDs and even some artillery. In addition, your poor radio range means you are more dependent on allies to be closer to spot, something not always possible in many of the situations an ELC gets itself into.

Scouting is recommended in all tiers due to the extreme specialization of this vehicle. The size, weight, and play style of this tank are comparable to the French Renault UE 57 tank destroyer. Keep in mind of how hard it is to hit you, as it could be useful in many situations. Be prepared to help teammates out, by scouting, flanking, or drawing an enemy's attention away for an "easy kill." This tank MUST be coordinated with allies, let them know what you're trying to do before you do it, although you can proceed to what you NEED to do in hurry cases. Help allies out, and the battlefield would technically be your team's turf.

Avoid opposing fast mediums or same-tier light tanks- they have enough performance to challenge your small stature and speed, and your pseudo-turret will be of no benefit. Vehicles such as the Chaffee and the VK 16.02 Leopard will have sufficient performance to catch, chase and destroy you. In these cases, use your good power-weight ratio of 36.98 hp/ton to make rapid, unexpected changes in direction and your very small silhouette to avoid as much damage as possible long enough for your team to reach your position and destroy the assailants.

Due to its short height, the ELC can sidehug a lot of heavy tanks and it would be impossible to hit, because some tanks do not have enough gun depression to reach it, though this is not recommended in the lower tiers or versus American tanks, as these tanks usually have enough depression to hit you, even when you are behind them. However, take care when doing such, for some of the slightly more mobile heavies would attempt to ram you. Getting under your enemy`s gun depression should be seen as an emergency tactic, it is recommended to 'boom and zoom' instead of hang around and get shot. Ramming in an ELC is universally considered foolish, due to the extreme light weight and armor of the vehicle. While the ease of breaking through enemy lines would normally make the ELC a good contender for an artillery hunter, the lack of a turret means that it is riskier to do so compared to other light tanks as it cannot circle them easily. It is not uncommon for artillery to be able to engage and destroy ELCs which break through simply because they could not shoot the artillery piece due to their limited traverse.

Some of the most epic battles are when two ELC drivers find themselves face to face. You could compare this to a medieval jousting competition. Skill and luck are of the essence, however mounted equipment and experienced crew are welcome. Always try to get the first damaging shot; if you do, stay on the enemy’s tail and finish him; if you don’t, hit him, then try to brake line of sight and finish him off after you reload. Remember, an ELC can always two shot another ELC (RNG can however be trollish). And if you are a confident ELC driver, USE YOUR HANDBRAKE! Not only in duels, but overall; an ELC that is confident in its handbrake turns, is extremely deadly.

INTERESTING FACT: In reality, the AMX ELC bis was a tank destroyer, not a light tank. If you install Binoculars or coated optics with a camo net than you can play this tank like a stealthy, fast Tank destroyer, moving quickly from place to place, taking a sniping shot before disappearing, only to reappear and take a shot again.


Early Research

  • The ER 53 radio carries over from the AMX 40, so it's available immediately.
  • First research the 250hp SOFAM 8Gxb engine for a significant increase in acceleration.
  • Research the 75mm Long 44 for a much needed penetration increase.
  • Research the 90mm D.915, which is easily the best gun for this vehicle.
  • Upgrade the suspension last, as the added weight capacity is unnecessary, but gives a bit more traverse speed.
  • Now research the AMX 12t, and prepare for another radical change in playstyle.

Historical Info

Prototypes of the AMX ELC were manufactured by GIAT Industries under the AMX (Ateliers de construction d'Issy-les-Moulineaux) designation, however the vehicle was not mass produced and did not formally enter military service. The vehicle weighed 6 tons, with the driver and gunner located on either side of the 90mm D. 915 gun mounted on the turret. The gun had a shooting range of 360 degrees when immobile, and was limited to that of a conventional assault gun when in motion. The AMX ELC had a SOFAM 8 Gxb engine. Several models of the turret (AMX ELC bis) were tested on chassis manufactured from plans created by Hotchkiss. The vehicle's drive suspension featured four roadwheels and two top rollers on each side.[4] A new chassis began development in 1957, and was completed in 1961 under the designation of the ELC bis. The prototype is persevered at the Museum of Armour in Saumur.

The following are consensus errors or inconsistencies which have been identified with the configuration of the vehicle in question and conflict with information available on the public record. The causes for these divergences in the game are normally not disclosed and may be rooted in game balance.

The 90 mm gun is the ELC's only primary armament, which the surviving prototype still carries today. The 75 mm configurations are fictitious.
  • Speed of the ELC AMX was supposed to limit at 80 kph
  • Turret could rotate 360° while not moving
  • The vehicle was actually meant to be a tank destroyer, not a light tank.
