In the autumn of 1942 the Alkett company started the development of a new SPG with a 150-mm gun. To boost new vehicle production, it was planned to use the readily available components of Pz. III and Pz. IV vehicles. The SPG was made on the same chassis as the Nashorn heavy tank destroyer. A total of 714 vehicles and 150 ammunition carriers that used the same chassis were built.
Built on the PzKpfw III/IV chassis, the Hummel is a very well-rounded piece of artillery. The second gun can take down or seriously damage heavy tanks. The favorite vehicle of any serious artillery player, it particularly excels at playing in "tank destroyer" (direct fire) mode when needed - however, because it has quite a substantial minimum firing-range, going into a shortrange gunfight is not advisable, since you're likely to just overshoot anything in front of you. Its second gun delivers large amounts of damage to enemy tanks at the expense of a slow reload and aim time. The Hummel is fast and agile enough to quickly retreat or relocate to hit them again. The downside of that much firepower is, as with any higher-tier SPG, the sheer cost of the ammunition - about a 1000 credits per round, it's actually pretty easy to lose a fair amount of money in a match if you don't aim carefully and/or lose.
The Hummel leads to the G.W. Panther.

The Hummel starts off as a larger version of the Grille with the same gun. As soon as the upgraded gun is bought, however, everything changes. First of all, the second gun has an extremely slow aim speed compared with other guns, and this can be quite frustrating in the beginning. If time and patience are taken, however, this SPG will perform incredibly. The gun does a nice amount of damage and penetration, and can stay competitive even in tier 9 games, although this will obviously be very difficult. The gun has an incredible amount of traverse without having to turn the whole vehicle, which works out phenomenally. Also, when fully upgraded, the Hummel can relocate and turn without a problem, thanks to its massive engine, quick acceleration, and nice top speed.
The 18 rounds carried won't run out as often as in the Grille due to the lower rate of fire. Fire discipline must be taken in order to be effective, and make sure to let the aim circle to shrink all the way without taking premature shots, as this is the only way to truly guarantee a hit. Other wise, it'll be a waste of a shell. The 19 seconds of reload time might seem long, but it actually works out quite well with the Hummel, allowing you to get a nice shot off, relocate, re-aim, and load at a fairly decent pace.
The tracks are needed in order to load the biggest engine, the largest gun, or any modules, so the tracks are the first priority. Next, work for that gun, since you will most likely already have the engines and radios if you have gone down the other German lines. With the tech tree complete, you can have a clean shot at the GW Panther.
In early 1942, one prototype based on the Panzerkampfwagen III’s chassis and armed with 105mm leFH17 howitzer (with muzzle brake) was constructed. Its design was rejected in favor of using the Panzerkampfwagen IV’s chassis. This design was accepted, and one prototype, based on the Panzerkampfwagen IV’s chassis and armed with 105mm leFH17, was produced.In late July of 1942, it was decided to replace the gun with the more powerful 150mm sFH 18 L/30 howitzer (without muzzle brake) based on the special chassis by Alkett/Rheinmetall-Borsig designated Geschutzwagen III/IV. It combined components of both the PzKpfw III (mainly Ausf J - driving and steering mechanism) and PzKpfw IV (mainly Ausf F - suspension, engine, cooling system). Originally, the Hummel (Bumble-Bee) was planned to be another "interim solution" until a especially designed gun platform / chassis was developed.
