Specifically, the mismatch in crew values caused by commander's 10% crew skill bonus. Outside of a crew of 1 commander only, 100% crew is a fiction. The client values, given for 100% crew, will normally be taken into battle with 110% crew skill members aside from specific functions, causing their actual performance to deviate from the expected client value. These differences are taken into account in tooltip boxes.

410000

The VK 30.01 (H) is a German tier 5 medium tank.

An order for developing the vehicle was placed on September 9, 1939. Over the course of its development, Henschel engineers actively used elements of the D.W. II project. The first two prototypes were ready in March 1942; another two were built by October the same year. Hulls of the prototypes underwent trials at the plant proving ground. After the trials, two prototypes were converted into heavy tank destoyers. Six turrets manufactured by the Krupp company were placed at the Atlantic Wall.

This tank is the fastest and most agile of the three German tier 6 mediums and packs considerable firepower. However, it has fragile hull and stock turret armor, giving this tank the lowest survivability for dogfighting and other close-combat encounters. Also, to be able to mount the 8.8 cm KwK 36 L/56 gun the turret has to be upgraded, but this will decrease the agility and drive-performance of the tank due to the added weight and the slower traverse speed. This tank is recommended for mid-range encounters, as the relatively accurate and powerful 8.8 cm gun proves extremely effective against even tier 7 tanks. Just make sure you have backup.

The VK 30.01 (H) leads to the VK 36.01 (H), and the VK 30.02 (M).

Player Opinion

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Very fast once upgraded
  • Has access to some good guns
  • Can use Additional Grousers (equipment)

Cons:

  • Armor is too weak to stop any weapon at this tier
  • Engine can be damaged from frontal hits.

Performance

This tank should be played either as a flanker or as a sniper. It's very similar to the PzKpfw III/IV. If you try to go toe-to-toe with enemies you will die right away and waste this tank's potential. For toe-to-toe combat, the VK 3601 (H) will serve you better. However, if you think shooting someone head-on with an 88mm is nice, imagine shooting them in the rear with the same gun.

For the players who favour long range combat, the 7,5cm L/70 is a great weapon, boasting both great accuracy, average damage, and high rate of fire. In a hull down position at over 300m range, even Tier 7 tanks can have trouble penetrating your turret front side. Then again, you'll have some trouble penetrating theirs too.

Early Research

  • Upon purchasing this tank, you should immediately install the 7.5 cm KwK 40 L/48 and upgrade the radio to at least the FuG 7.
  • Next you can decide between going for the Maybach HL 174 or the 7.5 cm KwK 42 L/70.
  • Now research the choice on the line above that you didn't do.
  • Upgrade the suspension next.
  • Go from there.

Historical Info

VK3001(H) prototype during tests. Note the concrete rings to simulate the weight of the turret.jpg
On 9 September 1938, Henschel & Sohn received permission to continue development of a VK 3001(H) medium tank and a VK 3601 (H) heavy tank, both of which apparently pioneered the overlapping and interleaved main road wheel concept for tank chassis use (they were already being used on German military half-tracked vehicles such as the SdKfz 7). The VK 3001(H) was intended to mount a 7.5 cm L/24 low velocity infantry support gun, a 7.5 cm L/40 dual purpose anti-tank gun, or a 10.5 cm L/28 artillery piece in a Krupp turret. Overall weight was to be 33 tons. The armor was designed to be 50 mm on frontal surfaces and 30 mm on the side surfaces. Four prototype hulls were completed for testing. Two of these were used to create the 12.8 cm Selbstfahrlafette L/61, also known as Sturer Emil.
