The VK 36.01 (H) is a German tier 6 heavy tank.
An experimental German WWII heavy tank developed by Henschel. The vehicle was a further development of the VK 30.01 (H) project and a stage in the design process for the Tiger. A total of eight chassis and one prototype were built in 1942. During the development, various technical solutions were trialed. Some of them later served as a basis for German heavy tank designs during the WWII. The chassis was also used in armored recovery vehicles.
This tank was the first prototype of Germany's PzKpfw VI Tiger. It's a good combat tank, with good armor and firepower once upgraded.
The VK 36.01 (H) leads to the Tiger I.

Player Opinion
Pros and Cons
Pros:
- Best armor of the three tier 6 German tanks
- Can use the excellent 7.5 cm KwK 41 L/58 Konisch gun, very powerful for its tier
- Decent maneuverability and acceleration once upgraded, the top engine is quite powerful
- Ability to rotate in place
- Spaced armor in the area of the engine
Cons:
- Rather slow top speed for a medium tank
- The 7.5 cm KwK 41 L/58 Konisch has very low damage unless used with premium ammo.
- Unsloped armor (this isn't necessarily bad, it is very easy to angle the armor for increased effectiveness)
- 8,8 cm KwK 36 L/56 lacks penetration
- Amazingly sluggish traverse speed on the move and when stationary
Performance
Considered by some to be the best tier 6 medium tank in the game, it possesses good armor, decent mobility and firepower, offering a wide selection of guns to fit different game-play preferences.
Players that chose the 8.8 KwK L/56 gun will find a reasonably accurate gun with a (relatively) powerful damage output and good rate of fire, even so, your best bet is to move in with a wave of other mediums or heavy tanks to pelt the sides of your opponents since your lack of penetration works against you in a sniping role. However, the 7.5cm L/70 gun has better accuracy and penetration, and if you choose to play as a sniper this gun is the far better choice.
When used with the 7.5 cm KwK 41 L/58 Konisch gun, the VK 3601 (H) becomes an even better sniper, on par with the Tier 6 tank destroyers. But be aware that this gun is only useful with the expensive APCR ammo, as its normal priced AP ammo has very low damage values. Used with APCR ammo it's arguably the best choice for this tank, but you will have a hard time making any profits, or at least avoiding losses.
While the VK 3001 (H) and the VK 3001 (P) have to be cautious of their lack of armor, this tank is capable of fighting more as a straight-up tank and feels more like a tank ready for production than a prototype. It can get into slug matches against lower tier opponents, it can support, it can snipe, it can do peek-a-boo from around corners ... Thanks to its armor and choice of guns, it's quite versatile.
On the other hand, it still is a medium tank and should not be confused for a heavy. It will come out on the short end of head-on engagements with most tier 6 heavy tanks, as they can often bounce the 8,8 cm gun or outgun the 7,5 cm guns respectively. In this case, knowledge of weaker spots on enemy tanks is necessary. However, running the Konisch 7.5cm gun with premium rounds will let you penetrate anything and everything you face.
Early Research
- All modules are researchable and mountable with the stock suspension
- The FuG 7 and FuG 12 radios carry over from any of the tanks leading to this one.
- If you unlocked this tank from the PzKpfw IV, then the 10,5 cm KwK 42 L/28 gun carries over.
- If not, then unlock the 10,5cm KwK 42 L/28 for more consistent damage dealing and catastrophic damage on penetration (French tank rears)
- Researching the 7,5cm KwK 41 L/58 is cheap and useful for gold ammo usage
- Unlock the VK 3601(H) Großturm for access to better cannons
- Research the 7,5cm L/70 cannon for a much needed penetration boost
- Buy the upgraded suspension for a badly needed increase in traverse speed
- Unlock the 2nd engine to compensate for the Großturm's additional mass and improve maneuverabiity
- Research the 8,8cm KwK 36 L/56 for a massive increase in alpha damage, although trading off a slight amount of penetration
- The top engine is good for increasing this tank's acceleration

Historical Info
Only four VK 3001 (H) prototypes were produced, two in March 1941 and two in October 1941. All were completed in 1942 by Henschel. In early 1942, one prototype VK 3601 (H) was built, along with 5 prototype chassis. Originally, it was planned to mount the VK 3001 (H) with a turret armed with the 75mm L/24 or 105mm L/28 gun, but none of the prototypes were actually fitted with turrets. The VK 3601 (H) was to be armed with the 75mm KwK 42 L/70 (Gerat 725), the 88mm KwK 36 L/56 (mounted in the VK 4501 (P)'s turret), or the 105mm L/20 or L/28 gun. But just as with the VK 3001 (H), it was never armed with any weapon.
Both designs were completed as prototypes, but their further development was cancelled in 1942 in favor of the development of the VK 4501 (H) that later became the Tiger 1. Turrets produced for both designs were never mounted and instead, in 1944, six VK 3001 (H) turrets were used in permanent fortifications: Panzerstellung/Turmstellungs of the Atlantic and West Wall. Their running gear was later modified and used as a base for the Tiger and Panther's running gear.
In March 1941, two VK 3001 (H)s were ready and from August 1941 to March 1942, were converted into 128mm Pak 40 L/61 gun carriers, the Selbstfahrlafette 12.8cm. Another two prototypes completed in October 1941 remained in Henschel's factory in Haustenbek and were used as recovery, training, and test vehicles. The VK 3601 (H) prototypes were used as recovery and towing vehicles. The VK 3001 (H) and VK 3601 (H)'s design led to the subsequent development of Henschel's Tiger I.
