The only reason why you would ever want to buy a Löwe is for german Heavy Tank crew training. The T34 is the better alternative as a standard matchmaking premium Heavy Tank. It deals 400 average alpha damage per shot featuring the same dpm as the Löwe, has a better damage done per used credit ratio, higher average penetration, more reliable gun mantlet / turret cheeks, 2 degrees better gun depression and a higher shell caliber (which can lead to certain target areas falling under triple overmatch rule for a shell from the T34's 120mm gun as opposed to the Löwe's 105mm gun). The only real downsides of the T34 are the worse aimtime (but 2.9 second is still far from stellar on the Löwe), slower turret traverse (though the T34's hull traverse is faster) and viewrange (which plays no role in an urban close quarters environment). | The only reason why you would ever want to buy a Löwe is for german Heavy Tank crew training. The Löwe is a German tier 8 premium heavy tank.
Development of this 70-ton super-heavy tank started on November 1, 1941. In February 1942, the Krupp company suggested the VK 70.01 avant project, later designated the Löwe ("Lion"). Several designs varying in configuration, armament, and armor, were drafted. However, the project was canceled after the Führer made the decision to develop even heavier tanks. No prototypes were ever built.
Designed for sniping, the Löwe is armed with the very accurate 10.5 cm KwK46 L/70, and is paired with a rather decent hull. While not quite as heavily armored as the Pz.Kpfw. Tiger II, it's sufficient to protect it from tier 7 guns. The turret however is heavily sloped allowing it to bounce even high tier guns . The performance of this tank is quite good for its tier, provided that it does not engage in close quarter combat, which is almost certain death for this tank. It has poor acceleration, so any reversal in direction will take some time. As a premium tank, it produces a significantly higher credit income than a typical tier 8 tank. The Löwe was added in the 0.6.4. patch, along with the KV-5 heavy tank.

Player Opinion
Pros and Cons
Pros:
- Excellent gun for a tier 8 heavy; better accuracy and penetration than the Tiger II's top gun
- Very strong gun mantlet and rounded turret front
- Excellent view range
- Upper glacis is strong enough against IS's 122mm or other guns with ~175mm penetration
- Great gun elevation allows you to easily shoot at tanks above you
Cons:
- Sluggish and slow
- Bad DPM (same as T34 but with worse Alpha of 320 instead of 400 average damage)
- Upper glacis isn't strong enough to resist guns with 200mm or higher penetration
- Large and weak lower glacis
- Large size, easy artillery target
Performance
By taking a look at the stats one might come to the conclusion that "The Lion" is primarily a support tank: High velocity / high accuracy armament and pathetic hull armour coupled with low mobility. So your best chances lie probably in a laid-back sniping playstyle. However 2 problems arise:
- You need a spotter
- The map has to allow for effective long range fire / lack of standard Heavy Tank frontline combat spot
Spotting for yourself can be viable since you have the viewrange for it, but if you want to want to utilize the 15 meters bush rule you need to spend additional seconds moving back, time that you might not have to properly line up your shot. If you shoot before moving 15 meters back you will most likely get spotted, which is fatal if you are not in a hulldown position, not to mention potential artillery. So ideally you want someone to spot for you, which simply cannot be relied upon in random matches when players with botlike stats simply yolo their light tank into the enemy lines or just don't know hot to utilize key scouting positions effectively. Luckily this problem can be overcome by choosing appropriate platoon partners.
The second problem solely depends on RNG. And with the abundance of corridormaps odds are you land on a map that does not allow for sniping. The higher the grade of "corridorization", the higher the chance frontline combat plays a role on the map you are playing on. In such a situation there is no way but to participate in an environment, which you are not suited for (quite ironic since you are a Heavy Tank). Your gun has no snapshot capabilites, you only deal your generic 320 Tier 8 Heavy Tank average alpha damage per shot, you have neither an alpha nor dpm advantage, you lack mobility for flanking maneuvers with an atrocious Power to Weight ratio of 8.92 hp/t and you cannot make use of your weight for ramming due to aforementioned Power to Weight ratio. Turret Cheeks are also somewhat weak with only 160mm of effective armour in spots with bad angle and the area under gun mantlet is flat out 120mm. If you thought a lower unangled glacis with 143mm effective armour is bad, you haven't seen the worst part yet: Between upper and lower plate is a small strip of absolutely FLAT armour for nominal and effective 120mm of armour. Sidescrapping comes to mind but with the front mounted turret you cannot hide the frontal plates and keep up an effective angle for your side armour at the same time.
In general, if a Heavy Tank decides to go sniping it behaves like a TD. This can work if the aforementioned points in the list apply. But if you try to pull off any sort of support gameplay on a city map, your team will be down one Heavy Tank in a crucial spot. And since the map design severely impacts support gameplay you cannot simply go camp somewhere and snipe all day long. It will simply end up with you dealing few / no damage and your team getting overwhelmed in close combat. Mobile Heavies like the FCM 50 t can adapt to a medium playstyle, join a medium wolfpack, win their flank and still come back for base defense, an option that is not available for you.
Last but not least you retain no useful traits in higher Tier battles. Your armour is already pretty bad for Tier 8 standards and it does not get any better higher up. Even 234mm of average penetration will meet its limit in some Tier 9 / 10 vehicles. Other than that the problems of pathetic mobility and DPM remain, two vehicle characteristics where high values are helpful regardless of your tier placement (shifting positions, emergency capture / reset, fast killtime, ability to out dpm opponents).
Note that the Löwe is notorious as the choice of tank for the "wallet warrior", a new player who tries to buy his way to victory. As the highest-tier purchasable German heavy tank, many new players tend to purchase the tank, and then get punished for their mistakes. They may underestimate you as a result, to their demise.

Historical Info
In the early months of 1942, Krupp was ordered to start the process of designing new heavy tank designated PzKpfw VII Lowe (VK7201). Its design was based on previous project by Krupp designated VK7001 (Tiger-Maus) and created in competition with Porsche's designs (including first Maus designs). VK7001 was to be armed with either 150mm Kanone L/37 (or L/40) or 105mm KwK L/70 gun. Lowe was to utilize Tiger II's components in order to simplify the production and service.
Designers planned to build two variants of this streamlined vehicle with rear mounted turret. Light (leichte) variant would have frontal armor protection of 100mm and it would weight 76 tons. Heavy (schwere) variant would have frontal armor protection of 120mm and it would weight 90 tons. Both variants would be armed with 105mm L/70 gun and coaxial machine gun. It is known that 90ton schwere Lowe was to have its turret mounted centrally and in overall design resembled future Tiger II. Variants of Lowe were both to be operated by the crew of five. It was calculated that their maximum speed would range from 23km/h (schwere) to 27km/h (leichte). Adolf Hitler ordered that the design Leichte Lowe was to be dropped in favour of Schwere Lowe. Lion was to be redesigned in order to carry 150mm L/40 or 150mm L/37 (probably 150mm KwK 44 L/38) gun and its frontal armor protection was to be changed to 140mm. In order to improve its performance, 900-1000mm wide tracks were to be used and top speed was to be increased to 30km/h. In late 1942, this project was cancelled in favour of the development of the Maus. During the development of Tiger II, designers planned to build redesigned version of Lowe (as suggested by Oberst Fichtner), which would be armed with 88mm KwK L/71 gun and its frontal armor protection would be 140mm (as planned before). Redesigned Lowe would be able to travel at maximum speed of 35km/h and it would weight 90 tons. It was to be powered by Maybach HL 230 P 30, 12-cylinder engine producing 800hp. Lowe would be 7.74 meters long (with the gun), 3.83 meters wide and 3.08 meters high. Lowe would be operated by the crew of five. It was planned that Lowe would eventually replace Tiger II.
From February to May of 1942, six different designs were considered, all based on the requirements for Lowe. On March 5/6th of 1942, order for heavier tank was placed and project Lowe was stopped in July of 1942. Lowe project never reached the prototype stage but it paved the way for its successor's development - Porsche's Maus.
