The Excelsior is a British tier 5 premium heavy tank.
An experimental assault tank on the Cromwell's chassis. Developed as a replacement for infantry and cruiser tanks. Development was started in 1942, and two prototypes designated the Excelsior were built by the English Electric Company in 1943–44. After the trials, the project was discontinued in favor of the Churchill tank that was already developed.
The Excelsior can be thought as the British equivalent to the American T14. This tank takes the middle ground between medium and heavy classes, and preforms below average for both roles. The armor and speed are above average as tier 5 heavies go, but the terrible gun is frustrating when fighting against anything with good armor.

Player Opinion
Pros and Cons
Pros:
- Excellent mobility for a tier 5 heavy tank
- Good gun depression
- Has preferential match making (only sees up tier 6)
- Thick frontal armor without weakspots works well when top tier
- Spaced armor in sides
Cons:
- Worst penetration of all tier 5 heavies, struggles against many heavily armored tanks (including itself) without resorting to
- Weak side armor gets overmatched by 122mm guns
- Extremely frustrating in tier 6 matches due to easily penned armor and terrible gun
- Prone to ammo rack damage from the front
- High gun dispersion
Performance
The Excelsior is largely a bully tank against same-tier mediums and lower, much like the T14 and Matilda IV. Against such opponents the armor and gun work just fine, while the mobility and surprising rear armor of the Excelsior allows it to handle multiple small threats with ease. Things quickly go wrong against more heavily armored targets, forcing the Excelsior to try and get to the sides or rear and risk or load APCR ammo. Tier 6 matches are very frustrating as the number of targets your AP ammo will not be sufficient against increase, while nearly everything will easily cut through your armor. Much like the Churchill I and III, the turret is flat and lacks a mantlet which severely limits your ability to protect the tank against high pen guns. Overall the Excelsior is a very matchup dependent tank that is often let down by the gun. The temptation to frequently dip into APCR ammo to correct the pen issue will quickly eat away credit income.
