The Progetto M40 mod. 65 is an Italian tier 10 medium tank.

In 1969, the Italian military delegation visited Germany to discuss the purchase of Leopard tanks. However, not all members of the delegation agreed with the acquisition of foreign vehicles. The Italian military experts and engineers specified the main requirements for the future tank: the slope angle of armor plates, the cast turret and gun mantlet, as well as the powerful engine from Mitsubishi that allowed production of a small, light, maneuverable, but perfectly-armored vehicle. The British and Soviet design plans collected by SIFAR-SID were taken into account. Development of the project was discontinued at the drafting and modelling stage.

The Progetto M40 mod. 65 marks the end of its Italian medium line.

Player Opinion

Pros and Cons

Pros:


  • Great all-around gun: decent penetration and gun handling, highly accurate
  • Is auto-reloaded, with 4 rounds in clip
  • Decent DPM for an autoloader, quick on both autoreloading and refilling
  • Very sloped hull armor, unaimed shots will often ricochet off
  • Decent mobility, also low chance of fire on engine damage


Cons:


  • Worst alpha damage of all 105mm L7 variants, somewhat limited one-clipping power
  • Low RoF compared to manual-loaders especially with drum emptied, making it less useful in early-game skirmishes
  • The turret, while of similar cast shape to the T-54, is not thick enough to resist most shots it could meet
  • Lengthy hull, not very wieldy around corners/obstacles


Performance

This tank, like his previous one, has got a similar play style such as the Leopard 1 but with and autoreloader gun. Your main role is to play like a support becasue this tank hasn´t got enough armor to work on the ridge line (sometimes some trolls bounce form the turret and auto-ricochet from the really sloped hull) and it has a really low DPM.

Progetto 65 excells on sniping role: with good values of gun handling, penetration, accuracy (0.29 with bia food and improved equipment) shells velocity (for both shells, 1468 m/s apcr round and 1173 m/s heat round, a nice improvement from Prototipo Standard B) , camuflage and 4 shells on the drum you will hit successfully your targets most of the time.

The bad new is the view range: 400m...so if you want to play like a passive scouting you should mount coated optics instead of improved ventilation (not reccomanded cause this tank needs all kinds of improvment for his DPM). Active scouting is still possible but you must be careful: it´s large for a scout, and the power/weight ratio is not the best with 18,75. This are only considered a lesser roles for several reasons. Namely, the size is not conductive to active scouting as it would be fairly easy to hit, secondly the p/w ratio is not good enough to keep this tank at a fast enough speed when going up slopes of a certain angle or more, or for accelerating to top speed from a standstill, and finally, it's simply a waste of a fantastic autoreloader gun and damage potential (1440 dmg in 7,5 seconds).

Other good roles are supporting flanker and finisher but keep always in mind the autoreloader mechanism: if you are in a 1 vs 1 situation and you fail to justice your enemy, your DPM will drop down into an abysmal 1700 (in the best case) and from predator you might become prey.

The Progetto 65 represents the essence of a versatile medium tank (half normal and half autoloader) that is excellent at long range combat, flanking manoeuvres and finisher role. In the hands of skilled players this tank is very dangerous, funny and quite cheap to play (for a tier 10).
