The Strv m/42-57 Alt A.2 is a Swedish tier 6 premium medium tank.
As part of development of the Strv 74, a project was proposed for a vehicle with the oscillating turret of the French AMX 13 tank and the 7,5 cm kan strv 74 gun; however, the vehicle was never built.
While it may not have the excellent gun depression angles and dynamics of Swedish mediums, the Strv m/42-57 Alt A.2 (which is quite a mouthful to say) is a decent fire support tank. With its ability to inflict high burst damage, and good soft stats (for an autoloader), it can be surprising effective if in the hands of a skilled tank commander. This tank is one of most deadly snipers found on tier 6.But it's effectiveness is mediocre on tier 7 and terrible on tier 8,when the strv m is just not that effective like it is in tier 6 battles.

Player Opinion
Pros and Cons
Pros:
- Huge clip potential of 600 damage.
- Decent reload of 16 seconds with a good crew.
- One of the best aim times and good accuracy for an auto loader on tier 6.
- 148/190 mm of pen are decent for a premium tank.
- Relatively small target, especially when compared to other tier 6 mediums.
Cons:
- Paper armor and lowest HP of all tier 6 mediums; very low survivability, vulnerable even to HE shells fired to front.
- Suffers from module damage; engine is very weak and can be damaged from front.
- Poor gun depression.
- Relatively poor dispersion values; doesnt snapshot well.
- Sub-par mobility.
Performance
This new Swedish tank is a great support tank, puting in 600 damage in an enemy tank and then falling back for the not-so-long 16 second reload. It's not fast so don't try to out maneuver your enemies (you're not a Cromwell B) and instead try to get the jump on your opponents while they are busy with your allies.
This is definitely a Support Tank. Avoid the temptation to play it like other autoloaders - it is too slow, the armor too weak, and and the camo too poor to roll up to opponents and drum them like with many other autoloaders. Hits to this tank frequently lead to crew casualties and module damage, so avoid getting spotted. Instead, stay off the front line and snipe from the second or third line. The gun is what makes this tank rock. Stay alive and you can rack up some major damage fast with the awesome gun. Play it more like a Tank Destroyer and you can do very well.
Be aware that this tank is "feast or famine". As top tier, when played correctly, one can rip apart tanks with the gun. Mid-tier matches can be good too. However, when bottom tier, the tanks weaknesses of large size, non-existent armor, low hit points, bad camo, and slow speed typically lead to a quick trip to the garage after accomplishing little as the gun is no longer effective and the tank has nothing else going for it.

Historical Info
The Strv m/42 featured a 75mm L/34 gun, the first gun of its size in a Swedish tank. This gun had similar performance to the German 75mm guns used on early Panzer IV tanks and StuG III assault guns.
Four versions of the Strv m/42 were produced, by AB Landsverk and under license by Volvo. Initially configured with an electromagnetic gearbox, this was replaced by a new hydraulic gearbox. Earlier vehicles were fitted with twin 162hp Scania-Vabis 603 engines, before Volvo developed and equipped its variant with the more powerful 410hp A 8B single engine.
In order to facilitate easy rail transport, the tank was relatively tall and narrow and this meant it had a relatively small turret ring. In 1944 it was decided to start development work on a new turret, which would be able to mount a high velocity 75mm gun. A French AMX-13 with a 75mm gun was purchased for trials. Engineers developed the Strv m/42-57 Alt A.2 project which proposed mounting the oscillating turret of the French AMX-13 tank and the 7,5 cm kan strv 74 gun onto the chassis of the Strv m/42. The project remained only in blueprints, and the vehicle was never built. The army opted instead for the Strv 74 which met their requirements at a lower cost.
The Strv m/42 was phased out of service in 1953. Instead of scrapping the vehicles, the chassis of all strv m/42 tanks with twin Scania-Vabis 603 engines were rebuilt between 1957 and 1960 into the new Stridsvagn 74 tank, and all those with the single Volvo engine A 8B engines were rebuilt as Infanterikanonvagn 73 infantry support vehicles. The turrets were re-used as static gun pillboxes, along major coastlines and harbors.
