Adding Ship Info

Hey Haswell, you might recognize me from attempting to help out with keeping the wiki up to date up until 4.0 and some others stuff. anyway my question is I would still enjoy being helpful by adding current data to the existing ships that still have some blank spots. Most notably the Ship Stats under the profile picture (armor, guns, engine, etc.) although due to my inexperience with editing wiki, I was wondering if you could tell or teach me how to plug data in so I could possibly help with the load with you guys managing this. If not I understand but I just like to be helpful. Right now im happy in just plugging info in under the stat section for now but happy to do more if you guys want me to. Hope to hear from you. --Scinfaxi:na (talk) 21:13, 30 June 2015 (UTC)

Hey Scinfaxi, of course I remember you! As you can see right now, the sidebar for ships pages only display armor, hit points and cost, I'm planning on adding the other data lines later this week.

The way the template works is by using extensions connected to the WG database and API, data can be returned upon request as long as there is proper input. Feel free to take a look at the templates here and here to get a grasp on what is going on right now, you will note that the data doesn't need to be manually entered for each ship at all, everything is automated. The two templates right now are protected, but you can try copying the two template codes to new pages for experimentation of your own.

One great help you can do for me right now is to go back to the ships pages and check if the entered templates are correct. Some of the pages lack the in-game research and opinion sections as they were created before the template was revised, so this is an issue that would need fixing sooner or later. One relatively quick way to identify which pages were created prior to the big revamp is to check the [of renamed pages performed on June 26 here], but beyond that you'd have to manually go into each page and check the code for the template.

Another issue unrelated to ships that needs fixing is filling out new vehicle pages. Since the wiki staff are never informed of any new addition of vehicles in any of the game titles, pages need to be monitored manually to identify which of them are newly added and lack the vehicle templates. I've created a master vehicle list just for this purpose, so I can quickly check which pages need to be initialized with the corresponding template. You can find the templates on my user page, it would be a big help to me if you can help fill out the uncreated pages.

I'm also now granting you contributor group rights, this should allow you to move and reupload files and pages along with other new options, they should make it easier to edit and update content.

Feel free contact me again if you have any concerns or questions.

Sure i'd be happy to help out. Perhaps you could purposely give me a ship page to edit for me to practice on. Just tell step by step how to do it and I will for any future pages that need it. Also on our master vehicle list, the Warplanes section has the WoT vehicles instead, just a heads up.--Scinfaxi:na (talk) 23:55, 6 July 2015 (UTC)

This is the template for ships. It's divided up into the description, player opinions, historical and reference sections. Take the Cleveland page for example, the lines for performance and research are missing because the page was created before the template was updated. There are other ship pages with this issue as well, so you'd have to go through them and see which ones have incomplete templates. Adding the lines back in should be straightforward. --Haswell:na (talk) 03:42, 7 July 2015 (UTC)

Ok, i'll try to update the Cleveland page then. check it out and see if it looks right, I put In the template you gave. I Also updated every single ship page with an outdated template (mainly just adding the research and performance parts. However I accidentally erased the historical info on the Umikaze, Wakatake and Isokaze destroyers that someone else had put in. I didn't realize I could just plug in the missing parts. Tell the person who did the info for those ships sorry and if it isn't too much trouble to put it back in. After those I realized I could just plug in the missing sections without erasing the whole template. But I managed to go through every single ship and add missing template info and even adding some wiki info to the historical sections.--Scinfaxi:na (talk) 20:40, 8 July 2015 (UTC)
