Kirov — Soviet Tier V cruiser.

One of the first large warships designed and built in the U.S.S.R. (Project 26). Despite her small displacement, she was equipped with very powerful long-range main guns and had a good speed. In contrast to the majority of her contemporaries, Kirov had weak armor.

Player Opinion

Performance

The Kirov is a very different beast to the Tier IV Svietlana. While the Svietlana is essentially an oversized destroyer with better armor and more guns, the Kirov has more in common with its Japanese counterpart, the Furutaka. Where the Svietlana relies on sheer volume of fire from its fast-firing 130 mm guns, the Kirov has much more powerful 180 mm guns, capable of severely damaging even battleships at close ranges, and with a maximum range comparable to that of the German Konigsberg-class. The 180 mm guns also have fairly good ballistics, which makes hitting targets at long ranges easier. The Kirov is also capable of high speeds, and accelerates fairly well.

However, these qualities come at a price. First of all, the Kirov is very much a glass cannon, with very poor armor even for a Tier V cruiser. It can take citadel damage from almost any angle from even other cruisers. It is also a very large ship with exceptionally poor concealment, comparable to that of battleships. It will almost always be among the first ships to be spotted, especially when aircraft are in play. The most serious weakness of the Kirov is that the ship is very unmaneuverable for a cruiser. It has a turning circle radius worse than some battleships, exacerbated by a middling rudder shift time. This can cause considerable difficulties when trying to negotiate areas with a lot of islands and obstacles, and also makes it very hard to dodge shells and especially torpedoes. The Vigilance skill is highly recommended with the Kirov, but even that may not be enough when facing aerial torpedoes from carrier aircraft. The Kirov does have a fairly good anti-aircraft suite that somewhat offsets this, however. It also uses the same torpedoes as the Gnevny-class destroyers. Their short range and high speed make them a situational weapon at best.

This combination of high speed, poor maneuverability, poor armor, and excellent guns with long range mean that the Kirov works best at stand-off distances. It is very risky to play the Kirov at close ranges, especially against enemies with torpedoes.

A final note is that the A Hull comes with a spotter plane, but has worse AA than the upgraded hull.

A more comprehensive review is here, written by ValkyrWarframe on the NA Forums.

Pros:

  • Excellent 180 mm guns: hard-hitting, long range, high velocity, with an acceptable rate-of-fire.
  • High speed and good acceleration.
  • Good AA suite.
  • Fairly good turret traverse speeds.
  • Has the option of using a spotter plane (the only other cruiser that can do so is the Murmansk).

Cons:

  • Very poor maneuverability.
  • Poor armor.
  • Exceptionally poor concealment range.
  • Large silhouette and citadel.
  • Cannot equip a catapult fighter.
