Player Opinion

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Very powerful gun armament
  • Very fast
  • Upper casement front is almost inpenetrable
  • Exceptional traverse to defend against circling maneuvers

Cons:

  • Very tall, large sides are very thin
  • Weak lower hull armor
  • Narrow gun arc makes hitting moving targets difficult
  • Sluggish Acceleration

Performance

The JagdPanther II is a very unique Tank Destroyer. With a Panther hull, it has high top speed and exceptional traverse speeds, but sluggish acceleration due to heavy weight. The superstructure armor is thick and steeply sloped leading to to be nearly impenetrable by tanks of the same tier. It's gun is further mounted to the top of that superstructure, which makes the playstyle of a hull-down medium tank viable. Positioning the JP2 behind a ridge tipping the hull near the limit of the gun depression will further angle the superstructure and increase deflection to the point where even Tier X weapons will struggle to penetrate. Drivers should take care though, the frontal and side hull armor is non-existent. Front mounted engine is very vulnerable to fire, so take care not to expose.

The 12.8cm gun it shares with the Ferdinand is magnificent. Very accurate, fast aim time, excellent penetration, good DPM, and good alpha. The accuracy and penetration make medium-long range sniping a very viable tactic as rounds tend to both go where they are aimed and penetrate when they arrive. Its' only deficiency is a mediocre gun arc which can be problematic in closer-range fighting. Exceptional traverse speed does help counter the poor gun arc, but inaccurate shots will always follow traverse snap shooting.

From a playstyle perspective there are a few options. Rolling it as a hull down medium is a very viable tactic. It easily keeps up with friendly medium tanks, and can deal serious damage with the 12.8cm gun. Take care of course to use ridges and hide the hull, firing from just behind medium tank brawl range. The large gun and thick superstructure also allows the tank to play a heavy tank support role up near the front. In many cases especially as top tier, it can play a hull down heavy tank role. The very good speed allows the JP2 to get to the front and into hull down positions before heavy tanks, creating significant map advantages. If not in a top tier situation, playing a sniper role is also very effective. The added bonus of extra speed and maneuverability lets the JP2 transition from any role and location on the battlefield quickly, further boosting its' potential.

Early Research

As long as the user researched the JPanther completely, this TD will have a very easy stock grind. All the engines and the first two guns carry over from the previous TD. the biggest research is the 128 mm, as the stock guns lack penetration and damage for its tier. Finally, the suspension will increase manuverability significantly.

Historical Info

The Jagdpanther II was conceived in November of 1944 by Krupp to up-arm the Jagdpanther with an 12.8 cm PaK 80. Since it was impossible to mount the 12.8 on the Jagdpanther in its current layout, Krupp redesigned the Jagdpanther with a new crew compartment which was to be very cramped. It was to weigh 51 tons and was to have a long reload. It was cancelled because the Jagdpanther with the 8.8 L/71 was more than adequate. It is a myth that the Panther II chassis was to be used for the 12.8 armed Jagdpanther, as the Panther II was cancelled months before the 12.8 Jagdpanther. In fact, the designation "Jagdpanther II" was never used for this vehicle. Instead, it should be called the Jagdpanther mit 12.8 cm PaK 80.
