The Renault UE 57 is a French tier 3 tank destroyer.
The Renault UE was originally built as a tankette (chenillette in French) for the purposes of being a light armoured tractor for hauling artillery and supplies around the battlefield. Originally armed with just a machine gun over 5000 were built for the French army and under license in other European countries.
The UE 57 was developed by Free French forces in 1943 in Great Britain by mounting the British 6-pounder gun on the chassis of the French tankette UE2. One prototype was manufactured, but did not impress during testing and was returned to its original state.

Pros and Cons
Pros:
- Best camouflage values in the game when stationary, as well as when firing and a very small silhouette.
- Fast rate of fire
- Extremely fast-firing, accurate stock weapon
- Good speed and acceleration for a Tier 3 TD, similar to the SU-76
- Very small size makes it hard to hit
Cons:
- Very narrow arc of fire and poor gun depression
- Poor traverse speed, and nearly untraversable at sloped terrain
- Worthless armor; front-mounted engine is easily knocked out
- 6-pounder gun can only fire AP and APCR rounds, and borders on inaccurate for a sniping role
- The lightest tank in game at 2.7 tons, it is extremely fragile to any type of ramming.
Performance
Often nicknamed "The Rat", the Renault UE 57 is the smallest tank for its tier and one of the smallest tanks in the game. Its most obvious features are its great gun choices, starting with the same gun from the FT AC. Its next 57mm is an excellent gun for its tier and can penetrate almost anything it comes across. However, its armor can't bounce anything, but if you get shots off on your enemy before they do they'll most likely be dead. It has a great rate of fire, though the elevation, traverse and depression of the gun are very limited. It's also a relatively fast tank, which is negated by its terrible traverse speed. In all it's best used to snipe from afar using its highly accurate and great gun, as you won't last long if you get very close to the front line.
Historical Info
In 1930 the French Infantry decided to develop a light armoured vehicle able to tow and supply small cannon and mortars. In 1931 the Renault company was given the contract for production of its Renault UE, combined with the Renault UK trailer. In 1937, from a number of competitors, the Renault UE2 was chosen as an improved type for large-scale production.
The UE could pull or carry 1000kg including 350kg in a rear mounted cargo bin and 600kg towed behind. A UE was often assigned to pull light artillery or mortars with an ammunition supply or bring up additional ammunition to support a machine gun detachment.
While the regular UE tankette remained unarmed or equipped with a single light machine gun, during the Fall of France in May 1940 there was a rush to send any available vehicle to the front with armament to stem the German Army's advance. There was a single prototype developed armed with a 25mm Hotchkiss gun, which resulted in an unfulfilled order for more to act as light tank destroyers.
Renault UE 57 was a prototype vehicle built by the forces of Free French Forces commanded by Charles de Gaulle in exile, while France was under German occupation. Developed in England 1943, the design was very crude, and it can hardly be justified even when taking into consideration the lack of funds and resources Free French Forces were suffering from. Essentially, it was a Renault UE artillery tractor with the small lightly armored superstructure on the rear of the vehicle. Main armament was to be British Ordnance QF 6 pounder anti-tank gun (57 mm) which was at the time already obsolete. Only one prototype was ever built, which was to serve as a demonstrator for the eventual small series manufacture. After the disappointing trials, all further development stopped, and all production plans were cancelled. After cancellation the armament was removed, and the vehicle was converted back to the artillery tractor.
After the Fall of France the German army capturde significant numbers of UE tankettes and some of these underwent modification to become Tank Destroyers. These were armed with a 37mm PaK36 gun and were designated Selbstfahrlafette für 3.7 cm Pak36 auf Renault UE(f); a further modification swapped the gun for 4 rocket launchers
