==FAQ: When should I use AP and HE?==

It's a often repeated question wether one should use HE or AP ammunition for a certain tank and gun. The simplest answer is, that one should use mostly AP shells and HE for some special situation, like stopping a capture attempt or dealing damage to a very well angled opponent. This answer is correct for most guns, but there are still some exceptions.

For a closer look at these exceptions, you have to look at the [[Battle Mechanics#HE Shells|HE shell damage mechanics]]. If you simplify the damage equation for a direct impact and assume that the target has no spall liner, you will get this:

The armor thickness is the nominal value, as HE damage ignores the armors' slope. So you can say as a rule of thumb: '''A HE shell can cause damage, if the HE damage value is bigger than twice the armor thickness at the point of impact.'''

you can distiguish 3 types of guns:
* With some guns, you should shoot only with HE shells. Those guns usually have very short barrels and a big caliber, so that they shoot very large shells but have a low muzzle velocity. They're also rather inaccurate and have a slow reload and aim time. Their AP shells have completely insufficient penetration values (if they're available at all), but their HE shells are usually devastating.
