Andalucía — Spanish Tier IX cruiser.

In parallel with the work on the construction and repair of ships for its navy, Francoist Spain was busy designing new ones. In 1938, five destroyer projects and several cruiser projects with displacements ranging from 7,920 to 19,000 tons were worked through. The largest was Project 138 for "a cruiser with a speed of 36 knots, " providing several main battery options. One of the options involved the construction of a cruiser equipped with turrets from battleship España. But the most common option envisaged three triple-gun turrets with gun calibers ranging from 203 to 254 mm.

Andalucía was first released for sale on DD MMM YYYY.

Combat Capability - Alternative Firing Modes

BurstFireModule.png
Andalucía can alternate between a regular firing mode and a Burst Fire firing mode. Firing the guns with the alternative firing mode enabled will fire 2 salvos in quick succession. This firing mode takes much longer to reload.

Requirements:

Burst fire can be toggled on and off at will.

Effects:

  • Reload time: 33 seconds
  • Interval between individual shots: 1.6 seconds
  • Number of bursts in a series: 2

The Ship

Andalucía is the Tier IX ship in the Spanish cruiser tech tree. She features larger guns and better survivability over her predecessor Cataluña.

Armament

Andalucía carries nine 234 mm guns in three triple mounts. These are the same guns found on British Tier IX cruiser Drake, but with different characteristics: she lacks Drake’s increased HE penetration and has slower turret traverse, but she has a faster reload at 14 seconds and an extra kilometer of range. She also has better overall ballistics. Her AP shells have good penetration and damage values, and are good for dealing consistent damage to enemy cruisers and scoring some chip damage on battleship upper belts. It can also overmatch 16 mm armor, allowing her to penetrate some high-tier light cruisers and most Tier VII cruisers regardless of angle. Like the other Spanish cruisers above Tier VII, she also has the ability to use Burst Fire. This allows her to fire two salvoes in quick succession, with a 31 second reload after. This needs to be used carefully by captains — for example, when you need to secure a kill at point-blank range or to start a fire on an enemy ship without DCP. Andalucía carries eight torpedoes in two quadruple launchers. Her torpedoes are decent, with good alpha damage, good speed at 62 knots and decent detectability at 1.3 km, but their 106-second reload is quite long. Their launching angles are also good, so they can be useful both to deter enemy pushes when retreating, or to deal significant damage in close-quarters combat situations.

AA Armament

Andalucía’s AA armament is mediocre to say the least. Despite having a high 6 km range and average flak damage, all her DPS auras values are poor and among the worst of the tier. As a result, she is vulnerable to attack from even Tier VIII carriers, and has to rely on allied support to deal with enemy carriers.

ASW Armament

Andalucía carries the standard Depth Charge Airstrike for Tier IX cruisers. It has two charges with a 7 km range and 30 s reload. Each charge has one aircraft carrying two bombs that deal up to 4,200 damage.

Survivability and Armor

Andalucía has a health pool of 48,300 hitpoints, average for her tier. Her armor, however, leaves a lot to be desired: her deck and upper belt are 27 mm, allowing overmatch by 406 mm+ guns, while her armor belt is made of two different platings, a 40 mm external plate and a 110 mm internal plate, and her extremities are 25 mm. She has spaced armor, but this won’t protect her from getting citadeled by enemy battleships. Captains must be good at dodging incoming fire in order to mitigate damage. She also has mediocre torpedo protection, with only 16% damage reduction, so taking torpedoes is something her captain has to avoid at all costs. Andalucía can be spotted from 11.7 km by sea and 8.8 km by air. While her surface spotting is average for her tier, the air spotting is among the worst. She will have a hard time when dealing with enemy carriers attacking her, and when she has to push enemy ships with spotter/fighter planes up, revealing her position way too early.

Maneuverability

Andalucía is one of the fastest Tier IX cruisers at 36 knots, but her handling is poor. Her 11.3-second rudder shift time, coupled with the 800 m turning circle, makes her very clumsy while maneuvering.

Consumables

Andalucía comes with a standard Damage Control Party consumable, Repair Party, and, depending on captain’s choice, Hydroacoustic Search or Defensive AA fire and Spotting Aircraft or Fighter. The best choice would be taking Hydroacoustic Search, to have better utility and some extra time to dodge torpedoes, and Spotting Aircraft to further extend her maximum range and aim better at ships hiding behind islands.

Battle Performance

Andalucía’s gameplay doesn’t differ too much from other medium to long-range kiting cruisers. Her captain should be aware of her weaknesses, especially her poor armor, and carefully pick her fights while keeping at a distance that allows her to disengage easily. Correct use of both HE and AP shells, coupled with her Burst Fire, can allow her to have a good impact on the game. She can farm decent amounts of damage over time with her HE and punish enemy misplays with her AP shells, using her Burst Fire if she is sure to secure the kill.

Pros:

  • Guns have flat arcs
  • Good AP damage and penetration
  • Access to Burst Fire
  • Good torpedo damage and firing angles
  • High maximum speed

Cons:

  • Weak armor
  • Burst fire has a long reload
  • Slow torpedo reload
  • Poor AA defenses
  • Poor handling
  • Poor aerial concealment

Research

Researchable upgrades for Andalucía:

  1. Hull: Upgrade to Hull (B) for improved survivability, maneuverability and AA. Research of this module unlocks progression to Castilla.
  2. Gun Fire Control System: Upgrade to SCI Mk 9 Mod. 2 for an extra 10% range on the main battery.
