Special

Jupiter '42 — British special premium Tier VII destroyer.

The J-class was a group of 24 destroyers built for the Royal Navy between 1937 and 1941. They were intended as a smaller alternative to the preceding Tribal-class destroyers, with heavier torpedo armament but reduced main battery armament. The design also included a new two boiler room layout that allowed for a single funnel and resulted in a smaller hull profile and better AA firing arcs.

Jupiter '42 was the final vessel of the J-class destroyers, and was laid down September 28, 1937 and launched October 27, 1938. She began the war as part of the 7th destroyer flotilla, serving in convoy escort and blockade runner intercept duty until 1940.

In 1941 she joined Force Z, which was formed in response to increased Japanese aggression in the South Pacific, and sailed to Singapore but was not present during the December 8th attack. In early 1942 she sank the Japanese submarine I-60, and joined the ABDA cruiser force during the Battle of the Java Sea, where she would sink after striking a Dutch mine.

Jupiter '42 was first released for sale on 16 Feburary 2024.

The Ship

Jupiter '42 is a British destroyer that offers a more aggressive play style than the Tier VII tech tree destroyer Jervis. Her concealment is excellent, and has improved high damage AP shells. In exchange, she has less torpedo armament and no HE shells.

Her hull is the same as her sister. Her hull is covered with 16 mm plating, thin enough to allow most AP shells to pass through without arming but thick enough to bounce light cruiser AP shells at steep angles. Her superstructure is 10 mm thick and the gun mount plates are 6 mm thick. Like most destroyers, she is vulnerable to HE rounds, and large-caliber HE rounds will easily knock out her modules.

Jupiter '42 has a base speed of 36 knots with a 590 m turning circle. Her rudder shift is 3.5 seconds, hitpoint pool is 14,300, and base detectability is 6.3 km. Her hitpoint total can be increased to 16,750 using Survivability Expert, and her concealment can be reduced to 5.7 km using Concealment Expert, both of which are recommended.

Armament

Jupiter '42 uses the same guns and turret layout as her sister Jervis, six 120 mm guns in an AB-X turret layout, with a pair of superfiring turrets in the front and one in the rear. The rear turret is able to rotate 360 degrees, making it easy to keep all guns on target when facing forward. She exclusively fires AP shells, but they have traits that are normally reserved for high tier British destroyers. Her AP shells can be reliably used against enemy destroyers, due to their improved penetration angles and reduced arming threshold and fuse time. Her base AP damage is higher than Jervis at 2500, and her reload time is increased to 6.5 seconds. Her firing range is 12.1 km. Her shell ballistics are also the same as Jervis, with low velocity overall and particularly floaty when used beyond 10 km. These traits are excellent for dealing with enemy destroyers, but she will struggle to deal with angle and heavily armored targets.

She carries a single quintuple launcher; like other UK cruisers and destroyers, she can single launcher her torpedoes. They have a 7 km range and reload in 120 seconds. Their damage is high for Tier VII at 18,433. Her torpedoes are not intended to be her primary means of attack, but a well-placed torpedo salvo can be devastating against most ships she faces.

She has another interesting trait. She is one of the few destroyers able to potentially, but not likely, achieve a secondary armament kill. Where a second torpedo launcher would normally be, she instead has a 102 mm secondary gun. This gun has a short firing range of 4 km and will play no part in most engagements, but can result in the entertaining secondary hit ribbon or even kill on occasion.

Consumables

Jupiter '42 carries a consumable set that captains of the British destroyer line will be familiar with, but also gains an Engine BoostWhile active, increases a ship's speed by a fixed percentage.. She has access to Damage Control PartyWhen activated, instantly repairs fires, floods, and incapacitations, and prevents more for the duration., Short-Burst Smoke GeneratorWhile active, generates a smoke screen that blocks line-of-sight for both enemies and teammates., Short-Range Hydro-Acoustic SearchWhile active, detects all enemy ships and torpedoes within the specified radius, without regard of obstacles such as smoke and terrain., and Engine BoostWhile active, increases a ship's speed by a fixed percentage.. The smoke screen has a short duration and short cooldown between uses. It is best used defensively as a tool to break line of sight with an adversary, whether this be ambushing an unsuspecting target and then disappearing before they can retaliate or as means of escaping a bad situation. The Short-Range Hydro-Acoustic SearchWhile active, detects all enemy ships and torpedoes within the specified radius, without regard of obstacles such as smoke and terrain. is primarily intended for defensive use, with an extended action time but short ship acquisition range.

Anti-Aircraft

Unlike Jervis, Jupiter '42 carries long-range anti-aircraft armament. Her short, mid, and long-range auras extend out to 1.5, 2.5, and 4 km respectively. Her short- and mid-range continuous damage is half of what Jervis has at 18 and 42 dps respectively. The majority of her damage will come from aircraft straying into the single flak cloud from her long-range AA gun, but that relies on the pilot making a mistake. The short range of her other armament will make dealing with aircraft difficult and engagement times short. Her best defense against aircraft will be avoiding detection, using her smoke screen if necessary. Captains will need to be wary of leaving her AA enabled around aircraft, as the long range AA will extend her air detectability to 4 km once it fires.

Battle Performance

Jupiter '42 has a play style that encourages short-ranged knife fighting with other destroyers and lightly armored vessels. She performs well at cap contesting and zoning out enemy destroyers. Her low detection range is good even by Tier VIII and XI standards, and most destroyers she does not outspot she will be able to counter spot when she is detected herself. She excels at ambushing destroyers that are not main battery-focused, with daring captains able to use her Engine BoostWhile active, increases a ship's speed by a fixed percentage. and Short-Range Hydro-Acoustic SearchWhile active, detects all enemy ships and torpedoes within the specified radius, without regard of obstacles such as smoke and terrain. as offensive tools to charge in and rush isolated destroyers.

Captains should be aware of the ships that they are able to effectively engage and those it would be best to run from. Her DPM is average, and sustained firefights are not recommended against destroyers or cruisers with high DPM . Instead, a more defensive playstyle is recommended here, using her high-damage AP to deliver a few damaging salvoes and then her Short-Burst Smoke GeneratorWhile active, generates a smoke screen that blocks line-of-sight for both enemies and teammates. or Engine BoostWhile active, increases a ship's speed by a fixed percentage. to disengage.

Against armored cruisers or battleships, her torpedoes will be her most effective weapon. Her average main battery DPM and lack of HE shells make it difficult to deal with most armored targets with her guns. If the target is sailing away, chasing isn't recommended. If they are pushing, captains will need to skillfully target her high-damage torpedoes to significantly damage them.

Pros:

  • Excellent AP with high alpha, improved penetration angles, and reduced fuse timer and arming threshold.
  • High torpedo damage.
  • Excellent concealment for a Tier VII destroyer, as low as 5.7 km.
  • Long duration Short-Range Hydro-Acoustic SearchWhile active, detects all enemy ships and torpedoes within the specified radius, without regard of obstacles such as smoke and terrain..
  • Access to Engine BoostWhile active, increases a ship's speed by a fixed percentage. consumable.

Cons:

  • Slow main battery reload.
  • Low number of torpedoes with long reload
  • No HE shells.
  • Poor AA defenses.

Research

As a premium ship, Jupiter '42 has no module upgrades to research.

Optimal Configuration

Jupiter '42 should be tailored toward improving her survivability and main battery firepower, with second priority going to her consumables. Her torpedoes are less impactful and should hold less priority than her guns.
