Leutnant Werner Gerth of 11.(Sturm)/JG 3 flew this Fw 190A-8/R2 "Black 13", which was fitted with additional side armor, during the summer of 1944. Born in May 1923 in Pforzheim, Gerth served with 7./JG 53 in the summer of 1943, before volunterring for the Sturmstaffel 1 in January 1944. Here, he became one of the unit's most successful pilots. Eventually appointed Staffelkapitan of 11./JG 3 on April 20, 1944, Gerth was awarded the Knight's Cross in October 1944 after 27 victories. He was killed in action on November 2, 1944 while Staffelkapitan of 14./JG 3. Having rammed an enemy bomber, Gerth attempted to bail out of his crippled fighter, but his parachute failed to open. By the time of his death he had claimed a total of 27 victories, of which at least 16 are believed to have been B-17s.
