The first prototype Curtiss XP-55 "Ascender" (s/n 42-78845) following a test-flight accident on 15 November 1943. Test pilot J. Harvey Gray, undertaking stall testing, had the aircraft fall into an unrecoverable inverted flat spin and bailed out.
