Gergovia

Jump to: navigation, search

Gergovia was the most important oppidum of the Arverni tribe in Gaul (modern-day France). Vercingetorix, son of the tribe's chieftain, fomented rebellion against Julius Caesar. The Arverni were Caesar's allies, and the nobles of the town expelled the young rebel. But Vercingetorix gathered an army of like-minded men and returned to lay siege to his hometown.\n\nHearing of the attack, Caesar led his legions to Arverni lands. The two armies met on the plateau of Gergovia in 52 BC. Vercingetorix controlled the high ground and Caesar was unable to storm through. When the Gauls pressed home their advantage with a cavalry charge Caesar gave up the battle and fled.

  • Gergovia is a large hilltop map with a fortified town in the centre, which contains winding roads and a central platform.
  • Watch for rear attacks: due to the shape of the town, enemy cavalry can easily encircle your forces.
  • The central hill can be key to victory: use a combination of ranged and spear units to defend its multiple access points.
  • All roads lead to victory, but not necessarily straight through Gergovia. Beware of enemies circumnavigating the city.
