Description
10 years. On December 27, it'll be 10 years since I started wearing my uniform. There could have been a ceremony or a dinner for officers. But this summber my division unachored and headed out west. Is it a lot, 10 years? Well, I was doing what I loved and I lived every day as if it were my last. I have enough memories to last several lifetimes. I could have worked my way up to a new rank or position a hundred times, but I didn't. I could have at least got my own company to command, but I didn't. That was probably foolish. I was in my element, I did what I knew and I was good at it. I was living by an idea. But an idea alone will only get with the division, even though that would have meant riding in an officer's cabin drinking the best coffee around. I was offered that, many times. But what about the old century? Family? These breathtaking sunsets? The snow falling in the light of a street lamp. What of that could I take with me other than memories?
On December 27, it'll be 10 years... No it won't. I wish them all the best out there, but back here, captain Lemartin is resigning on his own terms. Just one last patrol in his wonderful vehicle, and that's it: last line, last period. Le final.
