In the Battle of Marathon, the Greek city-states showed the world that the Persian Empire could be defeated by courage and planning. The previous year, King Darius sent Persian envoys to Greece to demand submission. Unafraid, the city-states responded by executing them.\n\nDarius retaliated by sending 600 ships and 25,000 soldiers to attack Greece, quickly conquering several islands. A combined Greek army commanded by Miltiades awaited their invaders on a beach near Marathon. The Persians favoured long-range missile assault, so surprise would be key. Once half the Persian army made landfall, the Greek infantry charged in and overwhelmed them.

  • This map is divided into three areas: mountainous slopes in the north, a central open plain, and a forested beach area.
  • The forested slopes in the north are ideal ambush country, but they will slow your progress.
  • You can control the east and west watchtowers to reveal hidden ambush points near the bases.
  • The central plain lacks cover, leaving you open to flanking manoeuvres. Teamwork is essential here.
