Cossack — British Premium Tier VI Destroyer.

One of the renowned Tribal-class destroyers with an emphasis on gunnery over torpedo warfare. During World War II, the ship's AA defenses were reinforced at the cost of one main gun mount.

Cossack was released in the store on April 13th, 2020.

History

Cossack was a British Tribal-class destroyer built to compete with the up-and-coming destroyer leaders of other nations. She had a heavy emphasis on firepower, and was originally equipped with four twin 4.7-inch gun turrets and one quadruple torpedo launcher. However, wartime experience with the rise of air-power eventually led to the third turret (or X turret) being replaced with a 4-inch dual-purpose gun for additional anti-air firepower.

In her first action, under the command of Phillip Vian in 1940, Cossack rescued British prisoners from the German supply ship Altmark. These prisoners had been captured by the Graf Spee during her raid in the southern Atlantic and were being taken back to Germany—it was a lucky interception.

Later in April 1941, Cossack participated in the Second Naval Battle of Narvik where the British fleet summarily destroyed nearly half of the German navy’s destroyers. A month later, she joined the hunt for Bismarck and made a torpedo attack on the battleship, but missed. (Although, 3 unconfirmed hits were claimed by the Tribal-class destroyer group with her.) In October 1941, Cossack was torpedoed near Gibraltar by a submarine, she sank a few days later in a storm.
