"The 16-inch gun mounts, known as turrets, occupied five levels of the ship. Three turrets were constructed on the North Carolina, two on the bow and one behind the superstructure, each with three big cannons. More than 150 men were required to keep each turret working properly and the guns firing. Built to go head to head with the guns of other battleships at seas, the 16s became the major weapon for island bombardment."
