Commander Bio:
Casto Méndez Nüfiez (1824-1869) was a rear admiral of the Spanish Navy (1865) and one of the most famous Spanish naval commanders of the 19th century. His career coincided with the transition from sail to steam and the appearance of the first ironclad warships. During his short life, Méndez Nüfiez participated in four wars, was wounded in battle several times, and circumnavigated the globe once.
While commanding the Spanish squadron in the Philippines, on November 17, 1861, Méndez Nüfiez stormed a fort in Pagalungan, skillfully maneuvering his flagship—steam schooner Constancia—right up to its walls. In 1864-1865, he commanded the first Spanish Navy ironclad, armored frigate Numancia, sailing her to the Pacific Ocean and proving that ironclads were capable of being ocean-going. In 1865-1866, Admiral Méndez Nüfiez commanded the Pacific Squadron in the war against Peru and Chile, operating several thousand miles away from Spanish bases. The years spent on endless voyages undermined the naval commanders health; he died at„the age of 45, holding the post of vice-president of the Spanish Admiralty.
