Primary Specializations

The Primary Specialization of a tanker is the tanker's role (or roles) as part of the vehicle's crew. As a tanker gains experience, their skills improve, and they become more effective at their job. Until the primary specialization of a tanker reaches 100%, the vehicle property associated with the tanker will be poorer than the vehicle's specifications; conversely, tankers who have their skills boosted above 100% will have their associated vehicle property perform at a rate higher than the vehicle's specifications.

Primary Specializations are broken down into five categories, each one having an identifying symbol:

Commanding: These tankers are responsible for looking out for enemy vehicles. They affect the view range of the vehicle, with more competent commanders able to spot enemies at a greater distance. Commanders also give a bonus to the primary specializations of the rest of the crew, with a larger bonus coming from a more competent commander. The symbol of a commander is a pair of binoculars.
Driving: These tankers are responsible for operating the driving controls of the vehicle. They affect the movement dynamics of a vehicle, with more competent drivers able to turn more sharply, lose less speed on turns, and accelerate more quickly. The symbols of a Driver are a cogwheel and a steering wheel.
Loading: These tankers are responsible for loading the next shell to fire. They affect how fast the next shell is loaded, with more competent loaders able to load the next shell faster, resulting in a lower reload time. The symbol for a Loader is a row of three shells.
Gunning: These tankers are responsible for aiming and firing the vehicle's gun. They affect the speed at which a gun will zero-in on its target, with more competent gunners able to zero-in at a faster speed, resulting in a lower aim time. The symbol for a Gunner is a cross hair.
Radio Operation: These tankers are responsible for maintaining contact with allies, so that they appear on the player's minimap. They affect the radio range of the vehicle, with more competent radio operators able to maintain contact with allies at greater ranges. At the base skill of 50%, a Radio Operator will operate a radio at 75% of its range. The symbols of a Radio Operator are a pair of headphones and a sound wave icon.

Tankers from any given crew may perform multiple roles, or multiple tankers may fulfill the same role. In the case of multiple tankers for the same role, the effective skill between the tankers is the average of the skills across all the tankers.

Bonuses and Penalties

There are two bonuses that can be applied to primary specializations: the Commander Bonus and Equipment Bonuses from permanent and expendable equipment.

Commander Bonus: The commander of the tank gives an experience bonus to every crew member, in the form of 10% of the commander's own experience, rounded to the nearest percent. This bonus will allow the crew to operate beyond 100%, and as a result, will perform better than the tank's specifications. The bonus a commander gives is an invisible value.
Equipment Bonus: Installing the Improved Ventilation equipment of any class will apply a 5% bonus to all of the crew member's primary specializations. The Chocolate, Coca-Cola Box, and Extra Combat Rations expendables for German, American, and Soviet tankers respectively, will give a 10% bonus.

A penalty to Primary Specializations can be applied as well should a tanker operate a vehicle from his own country that he is not trained for.

If a tanker is in a vehicle of the same class (but not in their own vehicle), they will take a 25% penalty.
If a tanker is in a vehicle of a different class, they will take a 50% penalty.

Bonuses and the final primary specialization level of a tanker can be seen by mousing over the tanker's icon in the garage or barracks.

Crew Injuries

During the course of battle, tankers can be injured and be taken out of the battle, making the tanker's skill 0% for the rest of the battle.

Commander injury removes the bonus given to all crew members and reduces view range.
Driver injury reduces the top speed, turning efficiency, and acceleration of the vehicle.
Loader injury reduces loading speed, meaning it takes longer to reload. Reloading may also be reset.
Gunner injury reduces aiming speed, meaning it takes longer to zoom into a target. Zeroing-in on a target may also be reset.
Radioman injury reduces radio range to 50% if all radiomen are knocked out.

Should a crew member have multiple roles, then all the roles associated with the tanker take a penalty. For example, a tanker who was responsible for as loading and gunning, then both the gunner and loader injury will take effect.

As the effective skill for a role when multiple tankers fulfill the role is the average of the skill of the associated tankers, the tanker that gets knocked out now only contributes 0% to the averaging calculations. In this way, crews that have multiple tankers for a single role are not as harshly affected by crew injuries, when compared to crews that only have one tanker for a role.

The Small First Aid kit and Large First Aid kit expendables will allow an injured tanker to return to battle.

Secondary Specializations

Secondary specializations are additional skills that a tanker can learn in order to improve other aspects of a vehicle, outside of the tanker's own proficiency. Training for these skills is available when a tanker reaches 100% in his primary specialization or in another secondary specialization. An small plus icon will appear on the tanker's icon to indicate that he is now ready to start training a secondary specialization.

There are currently three secondary specializations available:

Repairs: This skill improves the tanker's ability to repair a module that has been destroyed, with a higher skill level taking less time to repair a module. Repair skills are effective for vehicles of any kind, but most especially for the ones where returning to operational condition as quickly as possible is paramount, such as Tank Destroyers and their tracks.
Camouflage: This skill improves the tanker's ability to hide the vehicle from enemies, with a higher skill level giving a larger overall camouflage bonus, requiring enemies to be closer to the player in order for the player to be detected. This skill is quite useful for SPGs, Tank Destroyers, and Tanks that are better at long-range fighting.
Firefighting: This skill improves the tanker's ability to put out a fire, should a vehicle every be unlucky enough to be in such a situation, with a higher skill level resulting in shorter burn times. This does not affect the chances of a vehicle catching on fire in the first place. Firefighting skills are useful for higher-tier vehicles and vehicles with gasoline engines, as both have a tendency to catch fire easily.

After selecting one of those qualifications there will be a corresponding icon with the percentage level of that specialty. Maximum level a tanker can reach on the secondary qualification is 100%. After that, the tanker can start training another specialty, and continue the process until all specializations are acquired.

Secondary Specializations work immediately and are averaged across all crew members, meaning that secondary specializations are for the entire crew. Tankers that do not have any training in a certain secondary specialization will add 0% to the averaging calculations. Thus, to reach 100% of a secondary specialization for the entire crew, each crew member must reach 100% on that specific specialization. However, a tanker who is currently training one specialization cannot cancel his current training in order to learn a different specialization; the tanker must first finish his current training in order to start a new one.

If a crew member's primary qualification percentage drops due to retraining for a different vehicle, all new experience earned will go towards the primary qualification until it reaches 100% again. However, any secondary specialization will still be in affect.

Increasing or Changing Competence

In World of Tanks, there are only two ways to raise your crew's competence in either their primary or secondary specializations: participation in battles or by paying for additional training.

Battles

The main method of raising the experience of the crew is through participating in battles, where they will gain experience points, which is used automatically to improve their skills. This is the only way to raise the experience level of secondary specialties. Tankers that have survived the battle and did not abandon the vehicle due to it taking too much damage will receive a bonus to their experience. Since the rate of crew injuries may not be the same across all the crew members, it is possible that one tanker will improve his skills faster than another tanker in the same crew should he be knocked out less than his colleague.

Rapid Training is an option available only for Elite Tanks, tanks that have researched all upgrades. Selecting this option converts all experience that the tank would gain into a bonus that is applied to the experience that the crew gains, meaning that the player will no longer gain experience that can be converted to free experience. This bonus is applied to both primary and secondary skill gain. This bonus can be altered depending on the number of crew members in a tank and whether or not the tanker survived the battle. Tankers will gain a baseline 20% bonus to their experience earned in battle if they survived, and tankers that did not survive the battle will have the baseline level reduced to a 10% bonus.

Rapid Training can be toggled on and off at any time by a check box above the crew icons in the garage on the upper-left side of the garage interface, or by a check box in the upper-right corner of the vehicle's research tree menu. When a player turns on Rapid Training, a dialog box will appear to notify the player that it has now been enabled.

Players can instantly increase your crew's competency in their current tank or retrain your crew members for another tank, although doing the latter may cause your crew to lose some experience in the process. There's also a limit to what type of tanks you can retrain crew members to. This is the only way for tankers to operate other vehicles without a penalty. Do note that vehicle competencies are not cumulative, and tankers will still incur a penalty (See:Bonuses and Penalties) even if they are moved back to a tank that they used to be trained for.

There are three levels of training:

Tank Academy

At the cost of 200 gold, this option trains a tanker to 100% primary specialization.

Regimental School

At the cost of 20,000 credits, this option trains a tanker to a baseline of 75%, meaning that the tanker will have at least 75% primary specialization after retraining. If a tanker's primary specialization is below 75%, then his primary specialization after retraining is automatically 75%. If the tanker is above 75% primary specialization, then his primary specialization after retraining is as follows:

If the tanker is retraining to a vehicle of the same class, then the final experience is 90% of the tanker's current experience level.
If the tanker is retraining to a vehicle of a different class, then the final experience is 80% of the tanker's current experience level.

Rapid Courses

This option costs nothing, and trains a tanker to a baseline of 50%, meaning that the tanker will have 50% primary specialization after retraining, which is the absolute minimum that a tanker can be at. If a tanker is above 50% primary specialization, they are guaranteed to have a lower primary specialization level after training. The final primary specialization level after retraining through rapid courses is as follows:

If the tanker is retraining to a vehicle of the same class, then the final experience is 80% of the tanker's current experience level.
If the tanker is retraining to a vehicle of a different class, then the final experience is 60% of the tanker's current experience level.

Retraining a tanker can be done by opening the tanker's profile and selecting the "Training" tab. Here, the player can select which class of vehicle, which specific vehicle to retrain to, and the level of training the player intends to use. A tanker can also increase his skill in the vehicle he is currently in, as long as the vehicle selected for training is his own.

Why Retrain?

There are two main reasons why retraining an old crew is preferred over recruiting a fresh one:

Retention of Secondary Specializations: Fresh crews, regardless of what primary specialization that they started with, will not have any Secondary Specializations. Since secondary specializations are not lost, it is better to retrain the old crew so that the bonuses that they provide are kept, even if it means the tankers in the crew will have a drop in primary specialization.

Continuation of the Tanker's Career: Tankers will keep their statistics and awards regardless of what vehicle they are put in. Even though a retrained veteran might preform as well as a fresh tanker, the veteran's progress to their next award is kept.

Crew Ranks

Tankers will be promoted at 50% intervals, starting at 100% in primary specialization, then at every 50% and 100% while training secondary specializations. Not all tankers will start off at the same rank, meaning that all tankers may not end up at the same rank. Tankers cannot be demoted should they lose experience through retraining.

Tankers gain experience at a logarithmic rate, meaning that it will take longer for a skilled tanker to further advance his skills.

Players can look at the Personal File for each of their tankers by right clicking on the tanker's icon in either the Barracks or the Garage.

On the left side of the menu that pops up is a list of the tanker's basic information, including:

Tanker's full name, rank, and vehicle
Tanker's competence, or primary specialization
Tanker's modifiers
Tanker's secondary skills, either completed or in-progress.

In addition, there are buttons in the bottom-left corner to send the tanker to the barracks from his tank, and to dismiss the tanker from service. Dismissing a tanker from service cannot be undone.

On the right side of the menu are four tabs:

Service Record: This tab includes various battle statistics, such as battles fought and enemies destroyed, and awards given to the tanker over the course of his career. Battle awards given to a tanker will stay with the tanker, even if the tanker is retrained and placed in another tank.
Training: See also: Increasing Competance:Currency; This tab is where players can raise their tanker's competency or retrain them so that the tanker can operate a different vehicle.
Skills: See also: Secondary Specializations; This tab is where players can view all the secondary specializations that are currently available for the tanker to learn. When a tanker is ready to start his training on a secondary specialization, a button will appear which will allow the player to commence the tanker's training.
Personal Data: Players can change the name and face of their tankers, where they can select from a list of pre-defined first and last names, and a selection of face icons. Changing a tanker's personal details costs 50 gold.

Players can view details about the individual tankers and manage them from either the main Garage menu, or in the Barracks:

Barracks: Here is where players can find all their crew members, whether they are in a tank or in the barracks itself. Players start with sixteen slots in their barracks, and can increase the number of slots for 300 gold by scrolling down and selecting the Enlarge Barracks button. By using the toggles and drop-down menu on the left side, a player can sort his tankers by their nationality, vehicle training, primary specialization, and location, either in the barracks or in a tank. Tankers that are not currently in a tank can be dismissed from service, to free up a slot in the barracks. Dismissing a tanker is permanent, meaning any awards and skills a tanker had are lost to the player forever.

Garage: In the Garage, players will see icons on the left side that represent the tankers who are operating the currently selected vehicle, with the rank, last name, base primary skills, secondary skills and their levels of each. Mousing over a tanker will provide additional information, revealing the tanker's full name, total primary skills, bonuses, and vehicle training. Players can left-click on a tanker to bring up a small pop-up menu, which will allow players to view the selected tanker's personal file, recruit a tanker who can fill the selected slot, select a tanker from the barracks who is capable of filling that slot, or send the selected tanker to the barracks. If there is no tanker in a crew slot, then clicking on the crew slot will bring up the tanker recruitment menu, with the proper fields filled in.

You can recruit additional crew members by pulling up the "Recruit Crew" menu through two ways:

Through the Barracks Menu: Players can recruit a new tanker from the barracks by selecting the Recruit a Tanker button. A menu will appear, where players can specify via drop-down menus the desired Nationality, Qualification, Vehicle Class, and Vehicle that the new tanker will have.
Through the Garage Menu: Players can recruit a new tanker to fulfill a specific role by selecting a tanker's icon in the garage and then selecting the option to recruit a tanker or by selecting an empty crew slot. A menu will appear, with the Nationality, Qualification, Vehicle Class, and Vehicle drop-down menus already set for the specified role.

Roles and Primary Qualifications

Why do we have both "Roles" and "Primary Qualifications" listed when they're the same thing? It's confusing. Unless there is a difference that I don't see right now, I suggest replacing "Primary Qualifications" with "Primary Role" and "Secondary Qualifications" with "Secondary Roles".
