History

USS Omaha (C-4, later reclassified as CL-4) was a US light cruiser and the lead ship of her class, laid down for the US Navy in 1918. She was the result of a series of designs (the same one that gave the tier III US Cruiser Phoenix) which aimed to create a scout cruiser to be the eyes of a fleet and to operate with destroyers : This resulted in a pretty fast cruiser, reaching 35 knots, but sacrificed armor and crew comfort to achieve such speed required to operate alongside destroyers.

She received one battle star during world war two for her service in the European theater.

Commissioned in 1923, she spent most of the year doing her sea trial before being assigned to the Pacific fleet, where she became a destroyer squadron leader until May 1924, when she returned to routine operation on the pacific coast of the United States. In 1931, she joined exercises in the Caribbean, before being transferred to the Atlantic for a short time. The next year, Omaha returned to the Pacific, resuming routine duty on the pacific coast. In the first half of 1937, she managed to ground herself on a reef in the Bahamas, before going to Portsmouth for repair when she was freed 10 days later, returning to sea in early 1938 with a new captain. She was then assigned to the Mediterranean until 1939, when she returned to the US to receive a complete overhaul. It was at this moment the second world war broke up in Europe.

Transferred to the Atlantic, she did a couple of travels between Hispanic peninsula to protect US civilians and interest during the Spanish civil war (1936-1939), replacing her sistership USS Trenton (CL-11) in this task. Returning to the United States in 1940, she was assigned to the Caribbean, before a slight refit in New York when she was fitted with a radar. In 1941, Omaha was deployed for neutrality patrol near the coast of Brazil to intercept potential German blockade runners. She took part in the capture of the german blockade runner Odenwald, making her the last US vessel to receive a prize for the salvage of a vessel : Odenwald was scuttled by her crew, but the Omaha boarding party salvaged the ship.

Omaha was still in neutrality patrol near the south american coast when the Japanese raid of Pearl Harbor took place on the 7 December of 1941. In 1942, she spent most of her deployment in the Atlantic, continuing her duty of blockade runner interceptor until 1943, when her sister ship USS Milwaukee (CL-5) struck Omaha bow. The damage wasn't big enough to make them stop their patrol, but they were repaired at Rio de Janeiro once their patrol was finished. In 1944, Omaha was transferred to the European Theater where she took part in Operation Dragoon in mid-1944. Returning to the Atlantic once the operation was finished, she resumed patrol in the Atlantic until the Japanese surrender in 1945. Omaha was decommissioned and struck from the list shortly after being sold for scrap in 1946.

In World of Warships Legends, USS Omaha is represented in her WWII configuration, even if her second hull is fictional : she only had two quad 28mm AA guns, one on the front and one at the stern of the ship.
