Specifically, the mismatch in crew values caused by commander's 10% crew skill bonus. Outside of a crew of 1 commander only, 100% crew is a fiction. The client values, given for 100% crew, will normally be taken into battle with 110% crew skill members aside from specific functions, causing their actual performance to deviate from the expected client value. These differences are taken into account in tooltip boxes.

<value_unset_error>

The Su-85I was first released during patch 0.9.0 for purchase in the Premium Shop and became available for purchase in the in game shop in patch 0.9.2. The tank was removed from sale in the gift shop and to buy for gold via the in-game tech tree on 8/6/15 Removal of Premium Tanks From Shop as part of the WG retirement plan. In December 2023 it was offered to everyone via Twitch drops during the 2024 holiday event.

Quite the rarity in World of Tanks, the Su-85I features mediocre protection and a decent main gun but great concealment, especially while firing.

The <value_unset_error> marks the end of its line.

Player Opinion

Pros and Cons

Pros:

- Good alpha and one of the best DPM's of Tier V tank destroyers (2132.8)

- Better gun handling than most other Tier V TD's

- Great concealment values; best camouflage of Tier V TD's when firing the gun

- Big and heavily armored gun mantlet

- Third-best health for a Tier V TD

- Good forward top speed

- Preferential matchmaking, never has to face Tier VII's

Cons:

- Very tall profile and overall poor armor

- Sub-par horizontal gun arc and gun depression

- Poor power-to-weight ratio, struggles to climb hills

Performance

This tank has a decent gun for its tier, having the fifth-best AP-based alpha and sixth-best DPM of all Tier V TD's, however it's not terribly accurate. The Su-85I should be played like a support tank, although sniping is not impossible. AP penetration is good enough to hurt almost all tanks in Tiers V and VI, with exception of some heavies and TD's, so it's wise to bring along some APCR to deal with them, the main gun isn't reliable enough to fire at weak spots from long distances.

While the armor is decent for its tier it will be penetrated by almost anything the tank is matched against; it can only be relied on to attenuate non-penetrating HE hits. It's important to make use of its great concealment to stay hidden, take shots at unaware enemies, then use mobility to move to a new location or behind cover. The -85I has excellent maneuverability and can relocate very quickly and effectively. With binos/vents/Recon/Situational Awareness you can get the view range up to 455 meters; in a pinch with a decent radio range you can spot and tell nearby friendlies what you've found.

With its crew setup -- Commander, Gunner, Driver, Loader (Radio Operator) -- the Su-85I is crew-compatible with the Su-76I, both can swap and use each others' crew members without penalty. Compatible non-premium TD's are the Su-76M and Su-85B (but not the Su-85), both tanks' crews can be used in these two premiums with no penalty and are perfect "crew trainers".

Early Research

None required, this is a premium tank.

Suggested Equipment

Binocular Telescope Improved VentilationLow Noise Exhaust System

Documented Tank and Crew Builds

At Tier V mounting a Binocular Telescope is almost a must; beyond that you can't go wrong with Low Noise Exhaust (leveraging the -85I's superb concealment), Improved Ventilation, and/or Improved Aiming (which with vents can get accuracy down to 0.37). A Camouflage Net could work but perhaps shouldn't be taken in light of the TD's good mobility and mediocre horizontal gun traverse range.

Historical Info

The Su-85I was a medium tank destroyer developed by Lew S. Trojanow using the Su-76I as a starting point, which in turn were conversions of captured Panzer III chassis; both projects created during the early war as a response to the new well armored German tanks. The Su-85I project was halted due to a shortage of D-5S-85 guns and the uncertainty of whether or not more Panzer III hulls would be available. Work on the Su-85I was given up on once it was decided there was no more need to convert captured German vehicles; none of the type were ever produced.
