Commander Bio:
Charles Kingsmill (1855-1935) was an admiral of the Royal Navy (1917). At the age of 14, Kingsmill joined the British Royal Navy. After commissioning as an officer, he spent many years serving in different parts of the world, in the Pacific and Indian Oceans, Australia and East Africa. In 1905, after completing a war course at the Royal Naval College in Greenwich, Kingsmill was given command of battleship Majestic. A little over a year later, he became commanding officer of the newest battleship, Dominion, named in honor of the Dominion of Canada.
In 1908, Charles Kingsmill, native Canadian, who had over 30 years of service behind him and was well respected in Canadian government circles, was chosen to lead the future Canadian Navy. At first, he held the post of Director of the Marine Service, and with the formation of the Canadian Navy in 1910, he headed it as Director of the Naval Service, The first years of the young Navy were difficult, it was necessary to train personnel, master the first warships, and most importantly-to overcome the mistrust of those who believed that Canada did not need its own naval forces. Admiral Kingsmill led Canadian sailors through these trials with honor, earning the right to be named as the father of the Royal Canadian Navy.
