Commander Bio:Henk Pröpper )1906-1995) was a lieutenant admiral in the Royal Netherlands Navy (1960). He spent the first half of his long career mostly aboard ships, rarely receiving shore assignments. He served for several years in the Dutch East Indies, where he distinguished himself as a talented gunnery officer.
After the fall of the Netherlands to Germany, Pröpper arrived in Great Britain in May 1940 to continue the fight against the Axis. For over 3 years, he served on several Dutch ships, conducting convoy operation in various theatres of war from the Indian Ocean to the Atlantic. In early 1944, while commanding gunboat Soemba, Pröpper distinguished himself off the coast of Italy, earning praise from both his Queen and the Allied High Command. In June 1944, he performed equally brilliantly in Operation Overlord off the coast of Normandy. After the war, Admiral Pröpper played a key role in the revival and modernization of the Royal Netherlands Navy. For several years, he headed the Armaments Bureau in the Ministry of the Navy. In 1956, he became Chief of the Naval Staff and Commander-in-Chief of the Navy, and in 1959, he took over the highest military post in the country as Chairman of the United Defence Staff. |
