Commander Bio:
Joaquim Marques Lisboa (1807-1897) was an admiral of the Imperial Brazilian Navy (1867). Volunteering for the Navy in 1823, the future Marquis of Tamandaré's career almost coincided with the birth of both the country and its naval forces. As a young lieutenant, Joaquim Marques Lisboa fought in the War of Independence, followed by numerous conflicts that tore the continent apart for decades, forging his talent as a naval commander.
,By the time the Age of Steam began to emerge in naval warfare, Lisboa was already an experienced combat officer. In 1847, he became captain of the frigate Dom Afonso, the first large steamship in the Brazilian Navy. In the late 1850s, Lisboa, by then a vice admiral, oversaw the construction of a series of steam warships ordered from Europe to modernize the Empire's navy. The highlight of his career was the Paraguayan War, which broke out in 1864. During its initial period, he headed all naval operations, including the battles of Passo da Pátria and Curuzú, In 1866, Tamandaré retired from active service, continuing to hold senior military positions until shortly before his death. In Brazil, the admiral is revered as a national hero and patron of the country's Navy
