Commander Bio:
José Ferrándiz y Niño (1847-1918) was a rear admiral of the Spanish Navy (1912). He began his career at the age of 12, at the dawn of the steam era. In the mid-1870s, he taught at the naval school in Ferrol. Several years later José Ferrándiz was assigned to the armored frigate Numancia, before later joining the committee overseeing the construction of the first Spanish battleship, Pelayo. After the ship's commissioning, Ferrándiz became her executive officer and closest aid to the battleship's captain, the future admiral Pascual Cervera.
Shortly before the outbreak of the Spanish-American war, José Ferrándiz was appointed commander of Pelayo, on which he undertook a difficult voyage to the Suez Canal. The main events of the war ended before the Reserve Squadron, of which Palayo was a part, could arrive in theatre of operations. In the 1900s, Ferrándiz served twice as Minister of the Navy. His finest hour came when he assumed the ministerial portfolio for the second time in 1907, In a short period, he succeeded in launching a reorganization of the Navy and securing a budget for the construction of numerous new ships. The key element of Ferrándiz's shipbuilding program was the construction of Spain's first dreadnoughts-the España-class ships.
