Commander Bio:
Pascual Cervera y Topete (1839-1909) was a Vice Admiral of the Spanish Navy. As a young officer, he participated in several conflicts, including times when he served under the command of the famous Admiral Méndez Nüfiez. Promoted to rear admiral in 1892, he briefly served as Minister of the Navy, then as naval attaché in London, where he observed the development of the world's leading navy.
In 1897, Cervera was appointed to command the Spanish squadron in Cuba. Before the war with the U.S., he worked to improve crew training and the efficiency of the squadron. On June 3, 1898, his squadron—four cruisers and two destroyers—was defeated in the Battle of Santiago de Cuba, and he was captured. However, his bravery against overwhelming odds earned admiration in both Spain and the U.S., and he returned home a national hero.
