Rewards
Rewards for winning, placing highly, and participation have varied at the regional and international levels.
One reward that has been consistent since the start is the King of the Sea Flag, awarded to members of the winning team in each region. The KotS flag is unique not only for the level of bonuses it provides to ships flying it, but also that it is temporary — a team holds the flag only so long as it holds the title. Only the current winning teams may fly it.
Since KotS XII, Wargaming has been awarding significant cash prizes at the international level.

A foundational change
In Feb 2021, the player-founders of the King of the Sea tournament sold their intellectual property — notably the name and the symbols — to Wargaming.net. Wargaming stated that it intends to vigorously promote KotS as its premiere eSports competition. Internally, little changed. The tournament remains player-organized and run. Some rules were harmonized between regions, most notably ship bans.
With KotS XII, the tournament began offering cash prizes to successful international competitors.

Another foundational change
In March 2024, Wargaming announced major changes to the KoTS tournament. From now on, the tournament will take place once a year in Fall, with Spring KoTS replaced with Warship Masters International (WMI). The tournament was changed to be international only, featuring a minimum of the four best teams from each region. In order to qualify for the new KoTS, clans fight throughout the year, accumulating KotS Qualification Points based on their performance in Clan Battles, WMI, the new KoTS Regional tournament (a tournament similar to the old KoTS and open to all), and other smaller scale tournaments. Each of these have a different amount of points awarded. In addition, the prize pool of KoTS increased from $50,000 to $100,000 USD.
