Template talk:TankData

Jump to: navigation, search

Most of the directions look good Jiri. I only had some confusion with the Sources part. Also, on the last line, "anything" is one word. I'd just fix it, but I don't have access.

Regarding the Sources part:

  • |Sources= Panel for references, sources and external links. We don't have a reflist template so place any references manually with [#] in the text then please use # and a new line for each reference in the References section. If not referenced in the prior section use Sources and External Links to cite where you found the info used. Book and other offline resources use the sources part. Online resources use the external links part. Please use * and a new line for each. If left blank after the = will place {{append}}

I recommend changing the second sentence to "We don't have a reference list template, so place any references manually. Please add a # before each reference, followed by a new line for each reference in the References section."

Now the part I was confused about:

The 3rd, 4th, and 5th sentences: "If not referenced in the prior section, use Sources and External Links to cite where you found the info used. Book and other offline resources use the sources part. Online resources use the external links part." I found this a little confusing. The 4th and 5th sentences are clear, but not the 3rd. Reading that part for the first time, I wasn't sure what should or shouldn't go in the Reference section. After reading it a couple of times, I decided that perhaps the 3rd sentence should actually come after the 5th sentence, resulting in "anything that's not an external source or an external link goes in the Reference section." If this is correct, then I suggest renaming the "Sources" section to the "External Sources" section, as well moving the 3rd sentence to come after the 5th. Perhaps also change "References" to "Other References" and list it last. If I got your meaning wrong, then I have no idea what goes in the References section.

Ya sources need work. Trying to decide, and not in a rush mind you, what we need to be doing about citations. For now the format I was following was what is in use on the M4's page. Tons of references in the body of the text, flagged with [#], then a list of all them, in a short form, below in the References. In Sources a further full length bibliography style entry of all the publications that were mentioned in References (though the M4 is missing some). And if any of the references in References were online, those go in the External Links section. Failing a good set of references marked out with [#] just use the Sources and External Links sections.
Updated the usage instructions. --Jiri Starrider 04:40, 20 May 2012 (UTC)

If you bastardize the template like that it cannot detect whether there is content in sources= because you place your headlines there by default. There's a reason I had locked this template down and stated it was just for structuring the page, not layout. Just saying... --Snib 10:05, 20 May 2012 (UTC)

References Template

Looks like we need it to only mention it in {{append}} if all three (References, Sources, and Links) are empty. If you look at the KV-1, for example, it has a link listed, but References and Sources still get listed as missing. --Trifler 01:51, 21 May 2012 (UTC)

Suspension/Radio units in Cyrillic script

The headers are in Russian. Can someone with credentials please translate to EN? Tech78:na (talk) 16:03, 20 October 2015 (UTC)

Edit for more info: specifically;

Suspension	Load Limit
(т)	Traverse Speed

Tech78:na (talk) 07:37, 24 October 2015 (UTC)

I'm not sure where you are seeing Cyrillic characters, I'm not seeing any. Can you point me at a specific example? Screenshots might help too. --Haswell:na (talk) 17:30, 20 October 2015 (UTC)
Done, placed with OP (above your reply). Tech78:na (talk) 07:37, 24 October 2015 (UTC)
I should also point out that Radio header, specifically signal range, has the units with a Cyrillic m also: Signal Range (м). But this one is more recognisable than the suspension one, "гр"/sec, (although I assume it's in degrees anyway). Tech78 (NA/SEA) Talk 21:59, 25 October 2015 (UTC)
Now I see it, this is likely to be a localization problem in the widget itself. I'll pass this along, but I have no ETA on a fix. --Haswell:na (talk) 00:10, 27 October 2015 (UTC)

Clarification re:"above average" in advice sections

Hi. I'm assuming this is due to current-ness, or out-of-datedness, but I want to make sure this is the case. I may have inserted this phrase into some advice sections and will be sure to revise this where necessary with a more appropriate descriptor. Tech78:na (talk) 07:48, 24 October 2015 (UTC)

Subjective descriptions can be freely used as long as they aren't flat out inaccurate, and that there are examples to compare against. These comparisons will always be vulnerable to being outdated from one patch to the next, the best everyone can do is try and keep those pages updated. --Haswell:na (talk) 00:10, 27 October 2015 (UTC)

Update needed...

Skoda is currently missing... I would add the below code, if i could edit the page:

|group8=[[Czechoslovakia]]|list8={{TankList|nation = czech |gold = 1 | style = text |order = level |divider = • }}

Also, Template:Navbox-type needs to have an 8th pair of group + list added, to accomodate such change. -- CrystyB:eu (talk) 02:25, 29 November 2015 (UTC)

I'll work on it over the weekend, thanks for the reminder. --Haswell:na (talk) 07:34, 29 November 2015 (UTC)

Performance issue

Secondly, i don't understand what's going on, but http://wiki.wargaming.net/en/index.php?title=Test&action=edit&section=4 keeps saying "Template include size is too large. Some templates will not be included." The profiling data displays "Post-expand include size 2097152/2097152 bytes", so i think this `everything available via TankData` approach has grown too bulky. -- CrystyB:eu (talk) 03:14, 29 November 2015 (UTC)

The error is due to a change I made months ago attempting to "bypass" the issue of pages breaking because of vehicles being renamed, in that TankData will work as intended only in pages titled with the vehicle name. To force TankData to work properly in non-tank pages, an additional unlisted variable is required to specify the vehicle code for the template to work.
Next time if you see a page that throws the "template size exceeded" error, use the purge button on the left sidebar under Navigation to refresh the page cache. That should solve the problem unless there is something else broken. --Haswell:na (talk) 07:34, 29 November 2015 (UTC)
I just found a better example: Tank:G107_PzKpfwIII_AusfK is currently experiencing this issue, despite it being "titled with the vehicle name"... Tried to purge it, but that didn't solve anything. :-| -- CrystyB:eu (talk) 15:03, 1 December 2015 (UTC)
Pz3K is currently set to hidden in the database, meaning the template will be unable to access API data until the database permits it. This is why the page is currently broken, it will remain in this state until the tank is released and/or the database releases the block. --Haswell:na (talk) 20:28, 1 December 2015 (UTC)
PS If you look at the code in the sandbox, i was using the TankTest parameter... So i don't think the page name is relevant.
I amended your Tank to TankTest on the test page 3 days ago ;). --Haswell:na (talk) 20:28, 1 December 2015 (UTC)
Also, I just noticed something: at Tank:G112_KanonenJagdPanzer if i add
i get a page with some red "<value_unset_error>" messages where the tank name should be, but at least i can see the rest of the page. Oh, actually there was no need for adding that parameter; i just purged the page and it came up like that. Any idea what's going on? -- CrystyB:eu (talk) 15:36, 1 December 2015 (UTC)
This is a bug in the vehicle's localization, in that requesting the localization of the vehicle name doesn't return anything ({{#combatchars:G112_KanonenJagdPanzer|mark}} should return the string "Kanonenjagdpanzer", but it doesn't). This causes the annotation image next to the description blurb to display the default pic and the <value_unset_error>. I'll forward this bug to the higher ups, no idea when it will be fixed though. --Haswell:na (talk) 20:28, 1 December 2015 (UTC)
Fwiw, here's the full list of codes that don't have a mark associated with them (which means they would give that value_unset_error when attempting to use TankData on their page):

Don't know if they've been removed from the game or if they've never been in, or what else might be wrong with them, i'm hoping you would know more. (If they've been removed, i don't think this wiki should stop providing details about them...) -- CrystyB:eu (talk) 20:00, 1 December 2015 (UTC)
Most of those tanks are currently set to hidden in the database due to their unreleased/bot/special event status, that's why the template won't work with them.
A97_M41_Bulldog does not exist, the correct name is simply M41_Bulldog
Pz3K and KJP issue mentioned above.
T28_F30 and IS-3_auto will be shown when they are released for sale sometime this month (as per the advent calendar that I pay little attention to).
ISU-130 is hidden because someone deemed it rare enough to be hidden (even though I own one), here are its stats if you really want to see it.
AwfulPanther now only exist for record keeping purposes in the database, I don't think there are any plans to make it visible again on the wiki.
As much as I wish to provide full records of all tanks that exist and previously existed in the game, it is unfeasible at this point due to a) lack of available data (ie. old KV1, KV2, T23, Pz4, etc...) and b) the owners of this wiki (WG.net) don't want, or don't have ways, to display full histories of everything publicly. It is unfortunate, but there's nothing I can do here.
--Haswell:na (talk) 20:28, 1 December 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for that, it's great to understand it all. And, actually, Tank:R118_T28_F30 just became available on Day 1... ;-) -- CrystyB:eu (talk) 00:18, 2 December 2015 (UTC)
T28 made available, missing images because there aren't any images available. Czech nation added to footer. Fixed sidebar. Tell me if anything looks broken on the pages Tank:Cz01_Skoda_T40, seeing I basically overhauled the entire footer.
TankData is archaic and mindboggling in terms of template nesting, I really want to overhaul it completely one day. --Haswell:na (talk) 10:21, 2 December 2015 (UTC)
