An Amagi-class battlecruiser. Like the lead ship in the series, her construction was not completed. Boasted a very high speed and carried ten 410 mm guns.

Player Opinion

Pros:

• Like her sister-ship Amagi, Ashitaka boasts an impressive main battery armament of ten 410mm guns.
• Main guns are accurate and usually have little trouble hitting distant targets.
• Can outrun most other Tier VI battleships with her 30 knot speed.
• The ship’s main armor belt extends to cover most of the stern, allowing her to tank more effectively when angled away.
• Immense broadside firepower; number of shells will frequently guarantee citadel hits against broadside targets.

Cons:

• Lacks the large torpedo bulge found on Amagi.
• Main armor belt is thinner than most other Tier VI battleships.
• Lacks a catapult to launch a Catapult Fighteror Spotter Plane.
• The ship’s AA armament is light, leaving her vulnerable to attacks from enemy aircraft carriers.

History

Ashitaka was a Japanese Amagi-class battlecruiser under construction in the early 1920s. She was laid down in December 1921 as the final planned ship of the class. She was only initially named Ashitaka and was quickly renamed Takao. Construction stopped on the Ashitaka after the Washington Naval Treaty was signed in February 1922 and the project was officially canceled in July 1924. All of the Amagi-class battlecruisers were scrapped except for the Akagi which was eventually converted into a successful aircraft carrier. If Ashitaka was completed, she would have been an exceptionally powerful battlecruiser.

• Ashitaka was ordered as part of an expansion to the Imperial Japanese Navy’s Eight-Four naval construction plan made in 1917.
• She was intended to replace the Kongo-class battlecruisers in front-line service.
• The Amagi-class had limited inner-hull space due to the high-speed design. Unusual design choices, such as moving the forecastle, were made to add interior space.
• Her in-game model is based on a recently uncovered blueprint dated September 10, 1921.
• Ashitaka is represented in-game based on her original designs, unlike the refit version of Amagi.
• Designed as a battlecruiser, Ashitaka leaves more to be desired in regards to armor.
