In 1926, Spain ordered two "Washington Treaty" cruisers, Canarias and Baleares, named after Spanish archipelagos. Their construction was delayed until the Nationalists seized the shipyards and sped up work. Baleares joined the Málaga offensive, raiding shipping and coastal defenses before being sunk by Republican destroyers at the Battle of Cape Palos.
