Player Opinion
Pros:
- Good main battery firepower (when fully upgraded) - can fire forwards as well as she can backwards; good turret traverse, good reload time, and great firing range
- Has defensive torpedoes - may also be useful in ambushing unsuspecting enemy ships
- Good maneuverability - 35 knots top speed and 5.4 seconds rudder shift time
- Access to Sonar
Cons:
- Poor survivability - thinly armored and prone to rudder and engine incapacitations, coupled with her very low hit points for a Tier IV cruiser
- Poor torpedo range - can only reach out to 5.5km and thus are for last resort occasions
- Poor concealment - can be easily spotted as she can rain on her enemies
- Underwhelming AA firepower - can easily be targeted by aircraft carriers with little to no resistance
Performance
History
Phoenix is based on a US Navy proposal for a 6500 scout cruiser, dated from 1917 ; more accurately, the Scheme II, with a slight modernisation which makes the ship look like her successor, the Omaha class light cruiser. Lightly armoured (with a belt of only 3 inches/76mm), she was designed to be a fast vessel (32.4 knots) to be the reconnaissance vessels of a battleship group, and to lead destroyers flotilla. They were never built, but served as a basis to the Omaha class light cruiser, launched in 1920.
In 'World of Warships Legends', the ship is named after the city of Phoenix, following the US Navy tradition of naming cruisers after the capital city of states.
As she was never built, her second hull is fictional, and kind of a “what if” modernisation. This second hull creates a slight continuity error : she’s armed with two quads. 1.1 inches/28mm anti-air guns, meaning she’s in a fictional 1941 condition since this particular weapon was equipped on cruisers starting this year. The “error” resides in the fact that the real USS Phoenix (CL-46) was commissioned in 1938, having two ships sharing the same name being highly unlikely.
