Player Opinion
Pros:
- Atlanta's quick reload and huge amount of guns mean that any ship in her sights will soon be overwhelmed by low caliber fire, often leading an enemy to become panicked, and allowing you to do a large amount of damage very quickly.
- Weak armor means that shells fired at her in close proximity will almost certainly over-penetrate her armor, doing minimal damage.
- Her surveillance equipment makes her very good for providing a torpedo detection screen against enemy torpedoes, and also allowing her to hunt down enemy vessels hiding from her.
Cons:
- Atlanta's weak armor means that shells will easily penetrate the ship, and AP shells fired when you are bow on will almost certainly penetrate, dealing huge damage, and potentially even devastating striking you.
- Her guns are very weak, easily being knocked out by AP salvos.
- Atlantas shells are very floaty, and are very hard to aim at range, often needing huge amounts of lead past 12 km.
Performance
Atlanta is a ship that requires good positioning to use effectively. Usually, the best strategy is to find an island that borders a capture point that you can shoot over, drop anchor, and start spraying HE rounds at any enemy ships that you can shoot at. Leaving a secluded spot is not a good idea - any high caliber AP will make short work of you, and you will quickly start loosing HP - not a good thing as you have the second lowest HP pool of all tier VI cruisers. If you are rushed by an enemy ship be sure to use your torpedoes, they may be short ranged, but have some of the highest damage values at the tier (even having more damage that the tier VI Japanese destroyer Akatsuki.)
Once most threats in the area have been dealt with you can now start hunting destroyers, once one has been spotted start chasing it (be weary of incoming torpedoes), and if the enemy starts setting a smokescreen do not worry, you have Sonar. The huge amount of guns and quick reload will quickly melt away the enemy. For far away targets be sure to support your team by using your Surveillance Radar, unmasking all enemies in an 8.5 km radius for all to see!
History
Atlanta was laid down on 22 April 1940 at Kearny, New Jersey. She was launched on 6 September 1941 and was commissioned at the New York Navy Yard on 24 December 1941.
Atlanta was then transferred to Hawaii and joined TF 16 (Task Force 16). During the Battle of Midway Atlanta screened the aircraft carrier Hornet, and was then drydocked to have her bottom scraped, cleaned and painted. She then rejoined TF 16, before joining TF 61 in preparation of the invasion of Guadalcanal. During the battle she screened aircraft carriers as they launched attacks. She withdrew on 9 August when carriers departed.
During the battle of the Eastern Solomons Atlanta provided AA cover for Enterprise and having no further contribution. On the morning of 28 October she bought on board Rear Admiral Norman Scott and became the flagship of the newly created TG 64.2.
Atlanta was sunk during the naval battle of Guadalcanal. While dispatching Japanese destroyer Akatsuki, Atlanta was hit by a torpedo in the forward engine room. After Akatsuki sank, San Fransisco (part of Atlantas Task Group) opened fire on Atlanta in the urgency of battle, darkness, and confused intermingling of friend or foe. Most shells overpenetrated her, but some crew were killed by the shelling, including admiral Scott and members of his staff. The wounded were taken off by ships from Guadalcanal and Atlanta was then towed away by minesweeper Bobolink. Soon it was obvious that Atlanta was too damaged to be of any use. A demolition crew was authorised to blow the ship up. Atlanta was struck from the Naval Vessel Register on 13 January 1943.
