Performance
History
Cruiser - WichitaThe Wichita was a one-of-a-kind heavy cruiser built for the US Navy that saw extensive service in World War II, thus being a “Lone Veteran.” Originally, Wichita was slated to become a New Orleans-class cruiser, but the USN decided to take a risk and combined improved turrets from a New Orleans-class with a modified Brooklyn-class cruiser hull. This allowed them to optimize her performance and provided the basis for the later Baltimore-class.
Wichita entered service in early 1939 and was a part of the Atlantic theatre when the US entered the war. There, she took part in the disastrous PQ17 convoy and dueled the Jean Bart and other French forces during Operation Torch.
- Wichita transferred to the Pacific in late 1942/early 1943.
- She assisted in the Aleutian Islands campaign, as well as the comedic “Battle of the Pips”
- During the Battle of Leyte Gulf, Wichita assisted in sinking the light carrier Chiyoda.
- Wichita served throughout the Pacific, providing gunfire support up until the end of the war.
