Player Opinion
Pros and Cons
Pros:
- 4-round autoloader with good burst damage
- Outstanding premium ammo penetration
- Great gun depression and fully rotating turret
- Very good top speed, good reverse speed
- Good camouflage
Cons:
- Lenghty clip reload of 40+ seconds, low DPM
- Standard ammo penetration is low for a tank destroyer
- Unreliable armor, expect lucky ricochets and little else
- Fairly average hull and turret traverse speed
- Crew slots do not match any existing British tank destroyer
Performance
Whilst this tank may be labelled as a tank destroyer, it plays much more like the T69 medium tank than a true tank destroyer. The mobility, traverse speeds, alpha damage and even standard penetration all are very typical of a Tier VIII medium tank, and as such this tank feels very at home supporting mediums and as part of medium tank wolfpacks. The fully traversable turret and snappy gun handling also allow the GSOR to be very effective at reacting to threats and reengaging different targets, again a trait typical of medium tanks.
Whilst the hull of this tank is similar to a medium, the gun provides a noticeable tank destroyer element. The burst damage potential of this tank is lethal, with 1280 damage being unloaded in ~6 seconds. This makes it a very serious threat to any tank caught out in the open, as this can easily wipe out half their hit points if not more in a short space of time. Whilst bursty autoloaders with this potential are also present at Tier VIII medium, none of them can also boast exceptional gun handling to go along with it. The snappy gun handling allows for very effective sniping in the GSOR as well should the need arise, and makes picking off tanks with a tasty 1280 damage clip all the easier at mid to long ranges. Whilst the standard penetration of 226 is enough to contest most equal tier tanks frontally, should higher tier tanks be encountered, the phenomenal 321mm premium ammunition is enough to contest all but the thickest armour in the game.
This tank works as an excellent medium tank support. The clip damage can prove lethal with some high rolls to many equal tier mediums, and can turn you into the force that determines a flank if managed correctly. The excellent gun depression can also prove useful to outplay many tanks on ridge lines as well, as only the Swedish tanks at high tier best you. Like all autoloaders, this tank is exceptional as an ambusher as well, with its very fast intra-clip reload, it can unload its shells and retreat before the enemy tanks can react. The camouflage value is good enough to allow for such plays to be made, with careful consideration of enemy positioning.
There are some drawbacks to this tank however. Like the T77, whilst the burst damage potential is huge, so is the reload. A 40+ second reload for 1280 alpha damage is not very good, when tanks like the AMX 50 100 reload only slightly slower but pack 1800 damage in their clip. This is the Achilles heel of this tank - almost all tanks in the matchmaking spread of the GSOR have the DPM to outright kill it if caught on the reload. Furthermore, whilst the armour can bounce shots from lower tier tanks, it’s nothing to write home about when fighting equal and higher tier tanks at all. The 180mm frontal turret armour may appear impressive, but due to the flat plating and the nature of the oscillating turret, the thickness never exceeds this, even when using the gun depression of the tank. If you commit to an attack, always have a plan of where to go when you empty your clip, otherwise you are dead. Even one tank catching you reloading can prove fatal, and the armour will not save you.
The GSOR is an extremely fun and rewarding tank to play, with a fearsome auto loader with excellent gun handling statistics. If you fancy playing like a medium tank but with a bit more punch, this is the tank for you. Just remember to play around the long clip reload time, and always find somewhere to retreat after you’ve pumped out your damage.
