I'm not sure where you got it that the standard E8 does not have turret armor behind the mantlet. Perhaps you were looking at the top turret on the standard M4, or the T23E3, neither of which have significant overlap between the mantlet and turret face. The E8 has an 89mm mantlet with 76mm curved armor behind most of that.
