Campaign Description
The early 20th century was the golden age of armored artillery ships. Dreadnoughts replaced older battleships that had started to look rather poor in comparison with the more advanced steel monsters. Oil began to replace coal as fuel for ships, and each year more higher-speed battleships and battlecruisers, equipped with larger guns, were entering into service. However, it was the breakout of World War I in 1914 that put an end to the unconditional reign of dreadnoughts at sea. Pretty ironic, considering that this was the conflict in which these ships were supposed to prove their worth.
The appearance of a new lethal weapon - submarines - had a significant hand in this, combined with the advancement of aviation, which also started to make its presence felt in naval marine affairs. The unprecedented warfare, lasting several years, exhausted the resources of both the defeated, as well as the majority of the victors. Plans to lay down the huge armada of steel monsters that were preparing to enter service were doomed. After the war, several dozen battleships and battlecruisers at different stages of construction, including Prinz Eitel Friedrich, were dismantled.
Mission 1
Prior to World War I, the Russian Empire had been rapidly developing its fleet. By the time war broke out, seven battleships were finished and already afloat, preparing for commissioning trials. Shipyards were busy day and night, building the hulls for one battleship (to become Imperator Nikolai I) and for Izmail-class battlecruisers. The latter had an exceptionally striking presence: 32,000 tons of displacement, 222 meters in length, a speed of up to 27 knots, and twelve 356mm guns. In the midst of the war, despite reduced funding and missed deadlines for the manufacture of some mechanisms, all five ships were still put afloat, but the Russian Revolution prevented them from being completed. In the 1920s, the hulls of the former Imperator and all Izmails were finally scrapped for metal.

Mission 2
The Marine Nationale (the French Navy) also had extensive contsruction plans in the early 20th century. In the summer of 1914, three Bretagne-class battleships were at the final stage of completion, and five Normandie-class battleships were still in the shipyards. Four Lyon-class battleships, with unprecedented armament of sixteen 340mm guns, were supposed to be laid down the following year. Combined with the Courbet-class ships already in service, France would have had a formidable battle fleet, consisting of sixteen ships. But the outbreak of war dissolved these dreams. The entirety of the country's resources were redirected to the needs of the army, which retained a huge land front with its exhausting and violent battles. The Bretagne-class battleships were eventually put into operation, but Normandie-class ships had a much sadder fate - after the war, the hulls of four of them were scrapped for metal, while the fifth was finished as an aircraft carrier. the Lyon-class battleships weren't even laid down.

Mission 3
For the U.K., their fleet was not just a matter of pride, it was the nation's main weapon during World War I. Hence, no effort was spared to make it stronger. During the war, the U.K. launched more than a dozen battleships and cruisers. At the time of the end of the war in November 1918, another four monstrous ships were at various stages of construction. These were Hood-class battlecruisers with a displacement of over 42,000 tons and a length of 262 meters. Four years of war would eventually exhaust the resources of even an empire as large as Britain's, but Naval Command decided to finish the lead ship anyway. HMS Hood entered service in 1920, becoming a symbol of the Royal Navy's strength for two decades. As for her three sister ships, their story ended before it had even begun, with the steel of their hulls repurposed for peacetime needs.

Mission 4
The beginning of the 20th century was the German Navy's heyday, with their fleet comprising hundreds of warships, including nearly two dozen dreadnought battleships. In the coming war, the Kaiserliche Marine would face the world's largest fleet - the Royal British Navy. The large-scale construction of capital ships continued in the German Empire throughout World War I. At the time the truce was signed (November 1918), two more Bayern-class battleships and four Mackensen-class battlecruisers were at different stages of readiness. Three more battlecruisers with 33,500 ton displacement and 380mm artillery were ordered, but their construction never actually began. The Versailles Peace Treaty of 1919 turned these failed rulers of the seas into vast piles of scrap metal.

Mission 5
The fact that the United States entered World War I somewhat late, and Japan was situated far from the main military events of the war, meant that neither nation suffered from the same level of material exhaustion as other participants of the conflict. After 1918, these two powers didn't even consider curtailing their shipbuilding programs — in fact they enhanced them.
Between 1920 and 21, two Kaga-class battleships and four Amagi-class battlecruisers were laid down in Japan, with four Kii-class battleships also on order. Concurrently, six South Dakota-class battleships and six Lexington-class battlecruisers were laid down in the USA. Both Japanese and American ships were to carry guns with a caliber exceeding 400mm and have a displacement of 40,000 tons or more.
However, the signing of an international treaty on the limitation of naval weapons in Washington in 1922 prevented this enormous steel armada from being commissioned. Most of the ships were sent for scrap, and only four were completed, but as aircraft carriers. During World War II, these four giants (Lexington, Saratoga, Kaga, and Akagi) contributed to the coming of a new era in naval history — the era of carrier-based aircraft dominance.
