The construction of a large number of destroyers in the absence of cruisers raised a discussion in the U.S. Navy about the need to produce destroyer leaders. Some officers suggested creating an intermediate ship type that would combine the features of a cruiser and a destroyer. After a series of sketches, a project for the destroyer leader with a displacement of 2,200 tons and equipped with five 127 mm guns was proposed. The beginning of the construction of the Omaha-class cruisers eventually eliminated the need for a destroyer leader, and it was decided to abandon the construction of this class.

Player Opinion

Performance

The Nicholas is a welcome upgrade from the Clemson, and a very fun and strong destroyer for its tier. Compared to the Clemson, the Nicholas is a vast improvement in nearly every way. Perhaps the most conspicuous upgrade is the main battery, which previously on the Clemson was practically the same 102mm arnament found on the tier 2 American destroyer, the Sampson, including practically the samerange and rate of fire. For the Nicholas, not only has the caliber been buffed to 127mm and rate of fire buffed to a monstrous 12 RPM, the range of the guns can now reach 10.9km away even stock. The Nicholas also gets increased top speed by 2 knots, 8 seconds faster artillery rotation time, and a 0.3 km shorter spotting range. Finally, the torpedoes of the Nicholas have been improved in speed - 65 knots speed with the upgrade compared to the Clemson's 56, with a very insignificant damage decrease. The torpedo rate of fire has not improved, however, so don't expect to beat the Japanese tier 5 destroyer, the Minekaze, in torpedo firepower. The Nicholas has a fairly tall sillhoulette due to the tower in the front of the vessel, so once you're spotted you should be more careful as a destroyer's armor is basically nonexistent. Otherwise, the Nicholas is an excellent destroyer for its tier and can be very effective in both assaulting with torpedoes and harassing with its fast firing guns.

Pros

  • Monstrous rate of fire at 15 RPM, pairing with 127mm guns HE spamming from distance is a piece of cake
  • Torpedoes are much faster than Clemson at the cost of a very insignificant damage decrease
  • AA suite that can rip off some planes at the same tier and most carries at tier 4 and 5 will avoid attacking Nicholas
  • Very wide torpedo launch arc and with 2 triple tubes on each side, 12 torpedoes can be launched at once
  • Good pool of hit points at 13100 when upgraded
  • AP penetration is surprisingly good for a destroyer, can give poorly-armored cruisers it face a nightmare when aimed correctly
  • Fast at 37 knots and reaches up to 40 knots with engine boost consumable used
  • Stealthier than Clemson
  • Just one researchable module, avoids players from getting confused for wondering what to upgrade first

Cons

  • Bad armor like any destroyers
  • Suffers from frequent module incapacitation
  • AA suite, despite being useful at the same tier, will have a very hard time against higher tier planes
  • Terrible main battery firing arc from its bow
  • Stock configuration stll reflects low tier US destroyers when main batteries take a time to reload
  • Shell flight time is high making aiming a difficult thing, especially when shooting destroyers at distance
  • Torpedoes still retain the "traditional" 5.5 km range, making them almost useless except for the case of trying to go bow-on to an enemy battleship and launch them
  • HE chance of fire is low at just 5% and even with the Demolition Expert skill trained total fires set per battle don't increase much

Early Research

Since the Nicholas is very enjoyable and only requires one upgrade, go straight for that (B) hull upgrade, then proceed to Farragut

Historical Info

First sketches were of 'flush deckers' armed with either six 5" guns and two triple Torpedo Tubes, or four 5" guns and four Torpedo Tubes. The ultimate design (February 1919), was a 2,200-ton boat mounting five 5" guns on the centerline with twelve Torpedo Tubes mounted on the wings.

The final design would have provided the following armament:

5-In/51 x5

3-In. AA x2

21-In. TT 4x3

None of these designs ever made it to the production stage.

Special Note:

After an extensive search, the 'class' name of Nicholas produced no results whatsoever in relation to the 1919 Destroyer Leader. As such, one can only ascertain this was a 'placeholder' name. Should the development team ever seek to properly name this particular class, it would be suggested they use 'Huse'.
