History
USS Benson (DD-421) was an american destroyer, the lead ship of her class of 30 units. An evolution of the Sims class destroyers, she was designed by taking into consideration the experience gained with all the modern destroyers design of the 30s, from Farragut up to the Sims. Compared to their predecessor, the Benson class had a new machinery arrangement, and the torpedo armament was concentrated on the centerline, getting rid of the wing-mounted torpedo tubes. It was also the first US Navy destroyer to be fitted with quintuples torpedoes. The class was built in two groups : the first one, composed of the first height vessel of the class, was built with a simpler machinery system than the original design, and the second, built as designed. This difference in design led to the class to be known as the Benson-Gleaves class. The only external difference between both groups was the stack’s shapes.
She received 4 battle stars during world war two for her service in the pacific.
Commissioned in the middle of 1940, Benson did a short shakedown trial before being sent to French Guyana in September to prevent any axis activity in the area. Returning to the US a month later, Benson entered a post-shakedown trial until November, after which she was deployed to assure neutrality patrol, where she screened for a short time the battleship USS Texas (BB-35) in 1941. When the Royal Navy was hunting the german battleship Bismarck the same year, Texas and her group, including Benson, proceeded to scour the seas for the german ship until she sank by the hand of the Royal Navy in may. Returning to the US for a short preparation, Benson was deployed to assume escort duties between the US east coast and Island.
She was in the Pacific during the Japanese raid over Pearl Harbor and resumed the escort operation until the autumn of 1942, when she was assigned to Operation Torch, the invasion of French North Africa. Taking part in shore bombardment alongside the battleship USS Massachusetts (BB-59), she later collided with USS Trippe (DD-403), a Benham class destroyer. Returning to the US east coast for repair, she was damaged enough to be under repair until the end of Operation Torch. Resuming the escorting operations in 1943, Benson took part in the invasion of Sicily as part of Task Group 80.2. Joining later Task Force 81 to invade Italy, she witnesses the use by the German luftwaffe of the Fritz X guided gliding bomb on USS Savannah (CL-42) (a Brooklyn class cruiser, represented in-game by the premium ship Boise), and escorts her to Malta for temporary repair and prepares her to return to the United States. She then resumed escort and AA duties until 1944.
In early 1944, she returned home for an overhaul before being sent again in the Mediterranean to provide AA cover and in the middle of the year to contribute to the invasion of southern France. There, she took part in multiple shore bombardment alongside the Free French cruisers Montcalme and Jeanne d’Arc. Returning home in early 1945 and after a quick convoy escort in the Atlantic, Benson was transferred to the Pacific to contribute to the escort of the Essex class carriers USS Lexington (CV-16), USS Cowpens (CV-25) and USS Hancock (CV-19). She contributed to convoy escort until the surrender of Japan, after which she continued escort duties for two months. Returning home for decommissioning at the end of 1945, she was then put into reserve in the Atlantic Reserve Fleet. In 1954, she was transferred to the Taiwanese government where she was renamed Lo Yang (DD-14). Benson was struck from the US Navy list in 1974, after her decommissioning from the Republic of China Navy.
In World of Warships Legends, USS Benson hull A represents her as-built configuration. Her second hull seems to be fictional, Benson having never received 20mm Oerlikon AA guns in her career.
