Development was started before the occupation of France. The prototype first flew in the summer of 1945. A total of 200 aircraft were ordered. However, due to the development of jet aircraft and decreasing interest in the project, only 2 prototypes and a series of 4 aircraft were built.

Player Opinion

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Excellent sustained DPM, gets air kills via overwhelming rate of fire and gun count - a mix of 4 auto cannons and 6 machine g
  • Sheer DPM is great against bombers especially, will melt aircraft like the B-32.
  • Great turn rate, especially for a heavy fighter.

Cons:

  • Feels sluggish for a Heavy fighter at times, especially with boost.
  • Poor burst damage, don't expect kills - let alone heavy damage - in few shots.
  • Tied for 2nd worst HP pool with the XP-75, only being better than the Bf 109 Z.
  • Painfully slow boost recovery rate.

Performance

In most regards, the VB 10 takes the opposite approach of its German rival - the Bf 109z - though not to as far of an extreme as the XP-75. Taking a middle ground between being a flying hammer like the 109 Z and a flying buzz saw like the XP-75, the VB 10 does lean more toward the latter, though its trade of four machine guns for four auto cannons does give it a noticeably bigger bite than the XP-75.

Pilots should take advantage of the maneuverability of the VB 10 to line up strafing runs on targets of opportunity, especially bombers and even ground attack aircraft. Using the boost mainly to speed away from pursuing fighters and multi-roles. The VB 10 is perfectly comfortable dogfighting with most other heavy fighters, though be sure to do so without intervention.
