Player Opinion

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • High Durability
  • High speed and good maneuverability for a heavy
  • Long, powerful boost
  • Powerful foward-armament with long range
  • 2 twin tail guns with high damage and wide arc of fire

Cons:

  • Very large target
  • Autocannons have a slow firing rate and fast overheat
  • Fairly inaccurate without equipment or skills
  • Autocannons lose accuracy significantly when pilot is killed
  • Slow airspeed compared to jets

Performance

The XP-58 "Chain Lightning" is an interesting breakaway from its predecessor, the P-38 line.

Unlike the P-38, the XP-58 doesn't have rapid-firing machine guns and autocannons as well as a wide array of powerful ordnance. This minor setback makes it a bit worse in respects of sustained fire. Instead, its four accurate cannons have a very long reach and a very high damage per shot; this mixed with its impressive mobility characteristics makes it not only an effective bomber killer, but also a very good defensee aircraft. It can train its guns on multirole and pure fighters with relative ease, but absolutely shred bombers and attack aircraft quickly. Its powerful defense armament of 4 AN/M2s in dorsal and ventral twin turrets allow for very good defense against pests, especially with its wide gun arc.

Overall, the XP-58 "Chain Lightning" is a very different beast than its smaller cousins. It's not quite as flexible, but can punish nearly everything better than most planes it encounters.
