Special

Jäger — European special premium Tier IX destroyer.

In 1917, Austria-Hungary began working on a project to build a destroyer leader. A total of eight leaders and twelve destroyers were planned for construction. Draft designs were submitted by Blohm & Voss and Ganz-Danubius. The Austro-Hungarian Marine Technical Committee developed several projects—one of them, presented in 1917, provided for the construction of a 2,000-ton torpedo boat, which was to be equipped with 6-inch main battery guns. However, with the end of World War I and the collapse of Austria-Hungary, the destroyers were never built.

Jäger was first released for sale on 07 July 2023.

Tier IX premium destroyer Jäger is based on a World War I-era design for an Austro-Hungarian destroyer leader. In-game, she is the torpedo boat of a nation of effective torpedo boats. While some gunboat destroyers believe in volume of fire for their main guns, Jäger believes in volume of fire of her torpedoes. To her, there is no such thing as too many torpedoes.

Armament

Jäger is all about her torpedoes. She carries twelve torpedoes in four centerline-mounted triple launchers, with an above average 12 km range. They reload quickly, just 85 seconds base, with the same fast 86-knot base speed as Östergötland. With the proper build, her torpedoes can reach nearly 95 knots and reload in just 65 seconds even before Adrenaline Rush. Although she has the lowest torpedo damage and flooding chance of any Tier IX destroyer, the constant stream of torpedoes will still be painful for any target she chooses.

Like other European destroyers, Jäger can choose between narrow and super narrow spreads, rather than the narrow and wide of most destroyers. Like Halland and Östergötland, Jäger’s torpedoes have a higher detection range, but their high speed still leaves little reaction time for her targets.

Jäger has three 150 mm guns in single mounts. They have a very low firing range of just 9.6 km, with a slower 4.3-second reload and poor turret traverse. Although both her HE and AP shells deal high damage (and her HE shells have the highest damage of all Tier IX destroyers), three barrels and her slower reload leave her with the lowest rate-of-fire and some of the worst DPM at Tier IX. They can be used to fight a destroyer in an emergency, but they are at best a secondary damage source. In a gunfight, even many torpedo destroyers will outdamage her.

Jäger’s ASW defenses are strong but limited. She has two sets of depth charges that reload in 40 seconds each. Each set drops 6 depth charges, which is well below average, but they deal a massive 5100 damage with very high flood and fire chances. She uses the same defenses as Östergötland, but drops half the charges.

Consumables

Jäger carries the normal Damage Control Party and Engine Boost found on most destroyers, as well as a Repair Party. Her Damage Control Party has a 5-second action time with a 40-second cooldown and unlimited charges. Her Engine Boost increases her top speed by 8% and improves her acceleration. It has a 120-second active and cooldown time, and comes with three charges by default.

Jäger’s Repair Party is an unusual consumable for a destroyer. It heals 1% of her total HP per second for 14 seconds, with an 80 second cooldown. With the proper skills and signals, she can heal up to 12,800 total HP, over 67% of her starting HP.

Maneuverability

Jäger isn’t particularly maneuverable, but she also isn’t particularly sluggish either. Her 37-knot base speed is actually decent for Tier IX, and she can go as fast as 45.3 knots with the Sierra Mike signal and her Engine Boost and the Swift in Silence skill activated. She has a 3.7-second rudder shift, which is fairly average for her tier. However, her 670 m turning circle is rather poor.

She can’t outrun actual high-speed destroyers like her French and Russian counterparts, but she’s fast enough to reach caps quickly and avoid fights she doesn’t want to be in. Her larger turning circle will make it more difficult to dodge torpedoes, though. With the exception of her turning circle, Jäger handles almost exactly like Östergötland.

Survivability

Jäger is squishy, even for a destroyer. Her health pool is one of the lowest among all Tier IX destroyers at 15,900 base, and is lower than many Tier VIII and even some Tier VII destroyers. Even with Survivability Expert, she barely breaks 19,000 health. She has a Repair Party to heal back some damage she takes, but she should avoid taking it in the first place.

Jäger’s armor is typical for a high tier destroyer. She’s completely coated in 19 mm plating from bow to stern, with a 13 mm superstructure. Like most low tier destroyers of the same era, Jäger’s superstructure is very small. Any shell that hits her will deal damage, but luckily she is a small target to hit.

Her best-in-tier concealment will help keep her alive. At 6.7 km base, it’s already low for all destroyers in her matchmaking range, and it can get as low as 5.4 km with Concealment Expert and the Concealment System Modification 1 upgrade. Very few things will be able to outspot her on the surface. Her aerial and periscope detection is slightly worse than average, only able to get as low as 2.8 km.

Anti-aircraft

Jäger effectively has no defense against planes. She has no long range defenses, and produces no flak. Her mid- and short-range defenses have lower range than average, and deal almost no damage. Both auras are tied for the lowest damage in her entire matchmaking range. Her short-range defenses are worse than Asashio’s, and her mid-range is barely better than Yūdachi.

Planes are a major threat to Jäger if they can find her, and her AA defenses are little more than a welcoming light show for them. Her only “defense” against enemy aircraft is to “just dodge,” or seek allied air cover until the planes go away.

Battle performance

Jäger is a torpedo destroyer through and through. Although each individual torpedo hits like a wet noodle, she can produce a near constant stream of them to saturate an area or scare away enemy battleships and cruisers. Unfortunately, that impressive torpedo potential comes at the cost of almost everything else. Her guns are basically decoration, barely even useful for emergency destroyer fights, and she is an attractive (and defenseless) target for enemy aircraft.

Jäger should position herself near caps and other key areas, but leave the actual cap contesting to other destroyers. Instead, she should use her torpedoes to keep the enemy destroyer’s support away, or send them into the cap as a speedy surprise for the enemy destroyer. With her impressive concealment, she can provide valuable spotting for her team and take caps when necessary. But she must be aware of enemy destroyer positions and possible ambushes, as she relies on her team to fight any destroyers she can’t avoid.

Captains that want a highly specialized torpedo destroyer and have experience playing the Halland line as torpboats will feel comfortable in Jäger. But players that like destroyers with usable guns may find her to be an uncomfortable experience. Much like Asashio is a one-trick torpedo destroyer, Jäger is very much the same, just in a European package.

Pros:

  • Fast torpedo reload
  • Decent torpedo range
  • Speedy torpedoes
  • Amazing surface concealment
  • Above average speed
  • Repair Party consumable

Cons:

  • Low health
  • Slow turret traverse
  • Only three guns, with terrible DPM
  • Torpedoes deal little damage with very low flood chance
  • Terrible AA defenses, with no long-range aura
  • Average turning circle
  • No Smoke Generator consumable

Research

As a premium ship, Jäger has no module upgrades to research.

Optimal Configuration

Jäger is a squishy but stealthy torpedo boat with completely forgettable guns. Players should focus on skills and upgrades that boost her survivability, and improve her already impressive concealment and strong torpedoes. Her guns are nearly useless and not worth investing into.

Upgrades

The recommended upgrades are:

In Slot 2, the coal Engine Boost Modification 1 Increases the action time of the Engine Boost and Emergency Engine Power consumables.: +50% action time. upgrade is a viable option to extend her Engine Boost duration. But for players with limited coal reserves, it might be better to save the coal and upgrade other ships instead.

Commander Skills

Unique commander Jerzy Ṡwirski is a particularly good fit for Jäger. In addition to his improved Adrenaline Rush skill that’s useful on any ship, Jäger can easily activate his Torpedo Armament Expert talent, which reduces her torpedo reload by 5% for every eight torpedo hits.

Consumables

Jäger equips the following consumables:

Camouflage

As a premium ship, Jäger comes with Default permanent camouflage and a set of permanent combat bonuses.

Signals

Note: Use of the Juliet Charlie signal makes detonation impossible.
