Special

Somme — British special premium Tier IX destroyer.

The Battle-class destroyers, featuring enhanced AA defenses, were designed drawing on lessons learned from wartime and ordered by the Admiralty between 1942 and 1943. The ships ordered in 1943 differed from their earlier counterparts by having more powerful main battery artillery, and among them was destroyer HMS Somme, named after one of the biggest battles of World War I. However, she was never commissioned and remained unclaimed due to the end of hostilities in 1945. She was eventually demolished on her stocks.

Somme was first released on 19 July 2023, and is available as the reward for completing the Battle of the Somme collection.

Tier IX premium British destroyer Somme further develops the defensive destroyer play style of British destroyers and is an identical clone to Jutland . She has a Repair PartyWhile active, restores a percentage of the ship's health points each second. to help in destroyer-on-destroyer fights, and her AP shells feature improved penetration angles.

Armament:

Somme carries six 113 mm guns in three turrets. They have a stock 4.5 s reload, 12.5 km range, and a fast 180-degree turret traverse time of 9 seconds. All three turrets can rotate 360 degrees. Her HE shells have the same damage and fire chance as Lightning, but the smaller caliber means they only penetrate 19 mm armor. Her AP shells are lighter and deal less damage, but have improved penetration angles and a shorter 19 mm arming threshold. This allows them to fuse on destroyer plating. With her average reload and only six guns, both her HE and AP DPM are well below average.

Somme carries ten torpedoes in two quintuple launchers. Her torpedoes deal 15,533 alpha damage, and have a 10 km range, 133-second reload, and 62 knot base speed. Like other British destroyers, her torpedoes can be launched individually and used to devastate stationary or bow-in targets. As such, they are a complement to Somme's gun power, but still a secondary weapon.

Hull:

Somme has an average base health pool of 18,400 and a slow speed of 34 knots. Her maneuverability is good, with a 4-second rudder shift and 610-meter turning radius. Her concealment is excellent, with a minimum concealment of 5.7 km. As with the other British destroyers, Somme has enhanced acceleration but cannot mount Propulsion Modification 1 Reduces time to full speed: -50% to time for reaching full power. / Increases engine power when the ship starts moving.. This allows her to accelerate forward very quickly to high speeds, but she cannot slow down as quickly. Somme also does not have access to the Engine BoostWhile active, increases a ship's speed by a fixed percentage. consumable, and has no way to increase her top speed or acceleration. She must be aware of enemy ship movements, so she does not get caught in a position where her slow speed prevents her escape.

Consumables:

Somme comes with the British Short-Burst Smoke GeneratorWhile active, generates a smoke screen that blocks line-of-sight for both enemies and teammates., which has a short 10-second action time and a fast 70-second cooldown, but the dispersion time is reduced to 40 seconds. With the reduced cooldown, the difference between dispersion time and cooldown is only 30 seconds, so a new smokescreen will be available shortly after each use. They last long enough to disengage or farm ships with her guns. Somme comes with six base charges of her Smoke Generator.

She also carries the same Short-Range Hydro-Acoustic SearchWhile active, detects all enemy ships and torpedoes within the specified radius, without regard of obstacles such as smoke and terrain. consumable found on Lightning. It has a 180 s action time followed by a 120 s cooldown, and can detect both enemy ships and torpedoes at 3 km. With this consumable and her excellent concealment, Somme can contest key areas by alerting allies of incoming torpedoes and pushing enemy destroyers further away.

Somme features the Repair Party consumable, with two charges that each heal up to 10% of her maximum HP. This allows her to survive knife fights with enemy destroyers and increase her total potential health.

Anti-Aircraft:

Somme’s anti-aircraft performance is bad, with low long- and medium-range AA DPS (45.5 and 108.5 respectively). She also only produces two low-damage flak clouds, so enemy carriers will have no problems flying through her defenses. The short-burst smokescreens allow her to somewhat avoid air spotting, but players must be wary of straying too far from allied ships.

Battle Performance:

Somme is a cap-contesting destroyer, with her consumables aiding in fighting destroyers for cap control. Her short-burst smokes allow her to comfortably disengage and stay dark while still using her guns. Although her damage-per-minute is low for her tier, the combination of good AP shells, Repair Party, and Short-Range Hydroacoustic Search gives her many tools to outplay her opponents. When not contesting key areas, Somme has excellent concealment and usable torpedoes that can be launched individually.

Overall, Somme plays similarly to the British tech tree destroyers. Captains will appreciate her improvements over the preceding ships and ability to perform well in the defensive scouting role. She is a relatively decent gunboat backed up with very usable torpedoes, and players will likely adjust quickly to her play style.

Pros:

Cons:

  • Average HP
  • Mediocre damage-per-minute
  • Low HE penetration
  • Weak AA defenses
  • Slow
  • Does not have Engine Boost consumable
  • Repair Party only has two base charges
