Ruggiero di Lauria — Italian Tier X battleship.

A fast battlecruiser armed with eight 457 mm guns. The project is based on ideas introduced in 1921 by Italian naval engineer Ferdinando Cassone. In addition to its remarkable armament and displacement, both quite advanced for that era, the project stood out for its innovative anti-torpedo defense system and two-tiered power plant.

Ruggiero di Lauria was first released for sale on 16 August 2023 as part of the Steel Will event. She was added to the Armory on 06 December 2023 with the release of Update 12.11, and is available for 31,000 SteelSteel .

Tier X premium Italian battleship Ruggiero di Lauria defies most of the expectations of Italian battleships. While the tech tree battleships share inaccurate main armaments with lots of smaller-caliber SAP shells and a longer reload, Ruggiero di Lauria has accurate main guns that shoot fewer, but larger-caliber, shells with a normal reload.

Armament

Ruggiero di Lauria carries eight 457 mm guns in four twin turrets. Although her 30-second turret traverse is fast for a Tier X battleship, her 19.25 km base firing range is one of the lowest in her tier. Even with her Spotting Aircraft active, her main battery range would still be average at best. Unlike Cristoforo Colombo, she has an average 30-second reload, but with only eight guns her rate of fire and damage per minute are low. However, her guns are scarily accurate for their size, with the same battlecruiser dispersion as Alaska and Thunderer, with an average 1.8 sigma.

Like the tech tree Italian battleships, Ruggiero di Lauria fires SAP and AP shells rather than HE. Her SAP deals an impressive 16,600 damage per shell and can penetrate up to 114 mm plating, and has the same improved penetration angles as Cristoforo Colombo. Like other SAP shells, they cannot set fires and may be less effective against sharply angled battleship armor, but they have higher damage and increased armor penetration compared to same-caliber HE shells. Her AP shells are identical to those fired by St. Vincent, with 14,900 damage per shell and reduced fuse times. Although its damage is high for the tier, it is the second lowest of the Tier X 457 mm-armed battleships, only beating Kremlin.

Both her AP and SAP shells can overmatch 30 mm plating, making her guns a very scary threat to any cruiser she faces. Unless they have thicker icebreaker or belt armor, they cannot angle to her AP shells. And even if her SAP doesn’t overmatch, the improved penetration angles and high penetration mean it is still unlikely to bounce. Battleships can be more resilient to her SAP if it hits their thicker belt armor, but they will still take heavy damage through their superstructure regardless of angle. Due to the larger caliber, both her SAP and AP shells have a 10% damage cap against destroyers. Even a single SAP shell will still hurt, but she can’t delete a destroyer like Venezia can.

Like Giuseppe Verdi a tier lower and her Tier X cruiser counterpart Napoli, Lauria has SAP secondaries. She uses eight of the same 135 mm turrets as Attilio Regolo’s main battery, four on each side of the ship. However, she does not get any sort of improved range or dispersion, and is stuck with a terrible 10.7-second reload. They can penetrate up to 38 mm armor if they hit, but are not worth investing into. At most, they’ll provide a bit more damage against thinner targets that wander too close.

Ruggiero di Lauria’s ASW defenses are typical for a Tier X battleship. She has two charges that reload in 30 seconds each, with an 11 km range and two bombs per charge. Each bomb deals up to 4900 damage.

Consumables

Ruggiero di Lauria’s consumable suite is typical for a battleship, but small compared to many of her Tier X counterparts. She carries a Damage Control Party, Repair Party, and a Spotting Aircraft, all with normal stats. Unlike the high-tier tech tree Italian battleships, she does not have an Exhaust Smoke Generator.

Ruggiero di Lauria’s Repair Party has an action time of 28 seconds with an 80-second cooldown. It heals up to 14% of her total HP per charge with four charges base. Unlike many battleship heals, Ruggiero di Lauria’s repairs up to 33% of any citadel damage taken, rather than 10%.

A spotter plane is fairly common on battleships, but sorely needed on Ruggiero di Lauria. It increases her main battery firing range by 20% for 100 seconds, with a 240-second cooldown.

Maneuverability

Ruggiero di Lauria is fast, but not particularly agile. Her 35-knot top speed is the fastest of any Tier X battleship, although Bourgogne, Incomparable, and St. Vincent will outrun her when their Engine Boosts are active. With the Sierra Mike signal and Brisk commander skill active, she can reach 40.4 knots. She can easily keep pace with (or even outrun) her team’s cruisers and battleships, and reposition around the map as needed.

Her 17-second rudder shift is decent for a battleship, but her 1000 m turning circle is large for Tier X. Although she has an impressive torpedo belt, torpedoes will still be a threat as she will struggle to avoid them without earlier spotting from her allies.

Survivability

Ruggiero di Lauria is squishy for a battleship. Her 79,200 HP is well below average for Tier X, and even lower than some Tier IX battleships. As a result, she also heals less HP per Repair Party charge than many other battleships. Although her Repair Party heals more citadel damage than many other battleships, her low health means citadels will still hurt. Her 39% torpedo damage reduction is high for Tier X, but she should still avoid torpedoes whenever possible rather than rely on her torpedo belt.

Ruggiero di Lauria’s armor scheme is weird, with a very oddly-shaped citadel. She has the typical 32 mm bow and stern plating of most high tier battleships, with a thicker 120 mm central and rear deck but a 32 mm forward deck. She has narrow bands of 50 and 150 mm belt armor above her citadel. Lauria’s exposed citadel extends above the waterline, with an even higher section under the superstructure that is only 350 mm thick. Most of her citadel deck is 100 mm thick and vulnerable to AP bombs, but only 38 mm thick under her superstructure. Although still protected against most bombs, Hakuryū, Sekiryu, and Manfred von Richthofen’s upgraded AP bombs can still reach it and cause critical damage. Sometimes, she will bounce every shell that hits her, and sometimes she will eat a citadel at a random angle. Between her exposed citadel and low health, she must be careful when showing broadside to an enemy battleship.

Although she is a squishy target, her excellent concealment will help keep her alive. With a full concealment build, her surface concealment can get as low as 12.3 km, one of the lowest in her tier and lower even than some cruisers. Her aerial detection is less impressive at 10.15 km, but still decent for a battleship of her size. She has the exact same concealment as Thunderer.

Anti-aircraft

Like many other Italian ships, Ruggiero di Lauria does not have good AA defenses. Where most Tier X battleships have a 5.8 km long-range aura, Ruggiero di Lauria’s only reach 4.6 km, with the lowest long range damage of any high tier battleship. She also only produces four low-damage flak clouds. Her mid- and short-range auras have more normal ranges, but the damage from both is still underwhelming.

She has the option to swap her Spotting Aircraft for a Catapult Fighter for a marginal boost to her defenses, but they will still be ineffective against most Tier VIII carriers, much less Tier X or supercarriers. With the exception of flak damage, even Cristoforo Colombo has better AA defenses than Ruggiero di Lauria. Planes will be a problem for Ruggiero di Lauria, and she will rely on allied air cover for protection. Even Tier VIII carriers won’t be afraid of her AA.

Battle performance

Ruggiero di Lauria is a squishy, stealthy cruiser-killer. Like Thunderer and the British battlecruisers, she’s better suited for flanks than tanking damage head on. With her overmatch and accurate main battery, she poses a substantial threat to any broadside cruiser or battleship, and even destroyers will not be happy getting hit by her SAP. Her secondaries can deter smaller ships from venturing too close, but will not defend against a suicide torpedo rush and aren’t worth focusing on.

She should use her high speed and excellent concealment to quickly reach a flanking position where she can force a crossfire with her more durable allies. However, her vulnerable citadel, low health, and poor AA defenses mean that taking those positions comes with risk. Even a Tier VIII carrier can focus her down when isolated, and her oddly-shaped citadel means she can still take heavy damage even when angled or kiting. Damage she can’t really afford to take.

While Giuseppe Verdi prefers close range engagements and the tech tree battleships overcome their poor accuracy by throwing more shells at a target, Ruggiero di Lauria is a longer range sniper. She rewards good aim and positioning, but relies on her captain to truly take advantage of her strengths.

Pros:

  • SAP main battery shells with improved penetration angles
  • Improved main battery dispersion
  • Both SAP and AP overmatch 30 mm plating
  • Short-fuse AP shells
  • Secondaries fire SAP shells
  • Fast
  • Excellent concealment
  • Repair Party heals more citadel damage

Cons:

  • Low health
  • Vulnerable, oddly-shaped citadel
  • Short main battery range
  • Ineffective secondaries
  • Poor AA defenses
  • Large turning circle
  • Cannot set fires

Research

As a premium ship, Ruggiero di Lauria has no module upgrades to research.

Optimal Configuration

Like most other battleships, Ruggiero di Lauria should prioritize skills and upgrades that increase her survivability and main battery performance. Although they fire SAP shells with increased damage and penetration, her secondaries are not worth investing skill points or upgrades into.

Upgrades

The recommended upgrades are:

In Slot 6, players that feel her limited main battery range is too limited can swap Main Battery Modification 3 : -12% main battery loading time. / -13% main battery traverse speed. for Gun Fire Control System Modification 2 : +16% firing range.. This allows her to play at a more comfortable distance and provide better fire support to the opposite flank, but comes at the expense of lowering her damage potential.

Commander Skills

Like all other Italian ships, Unique commander Luigi Sansonetti will be a good fit in Ruggiero di Lauria. His Far Reach talent that increases her main battery range after killing an enemy ship will be a very welcome boost to her short gun range. His Rapid Fire talent provides a 15% boost to her reload upon earning the Confederate achievement, which further increases her already potent main battery potential. Although less reliable than in the cruisers, she can sometimes activate his Concealed Reserves talent too, for longer Repair Party duration.

Consumables

Ruggiero di Lauria equips the following consumables:

Camouflage

As a premium ship, Ruggiero di Lauria comes with Default permanent camouflage and a set of permanent combat bonuses.
