Special

Daisen — Japanese special premium Tier IX battleship.

In 1916, as a part of the development of the fleet, the Japanese parliament approved the construction of two battlecruisers in addition to the Kongō-class ships. That same year, Japanese shipbuilders presented four battlecruiser projects that differed in the power of the propulsion unit and individual armor elements but were all capable of reaching a speed of 35 knots. The six-shaft power unit became a specific feature. After a number of improvements, these designs became the basis for the Amagi-class battlecruisers.

Daisen was first released for completing all 34 Stages of the Kure Dockyard on 19 April 2023.

Performance

Warning. The data presented in the AA Defense sidebar section may be incorrect.
Refer to the in-game Port screens for more useful data.

Tier IX Japanese premium battleship Daisen combines elements of both traditional Japanese battleships and battlecruisers. She combines the former’s highly accurate guns with the latter’s superb speed and poor survivability.

Hull

Daisen cannot boast of having good survivability. Her main belt is only 305 mm thick and vulnerable to many AP shells. Her deck is only 32 mm thick, leaving her susceptible to most HE shells. Her large size compounds these weaknesses, making her an easy target to hit at any range. Her low HP of just 69,300 means she won’t last long under sustained fire. Her only redeeming factor to her survivability is her torpedo protection of 53%, which reduces the threat of torpedoes. Regardless, captains should seek to avoid any unnecessary damage.

Daisen’s maneuverability is one of extremes. On one end is her speed, reaching a staggering 35 knots and among the best in her tier. This allows her to quickly change positions, responding to new situations in battle. On the other end is her turning circle of 1,100 meters, easily the worst in her tier. Combined with her average rudder shift of 16 s, captains should plan their maneuvers well in advance. Her concealment is mediocre, only 13.4 km when fully specced and somewhat limiting her flexibility in battle.

Armament

Daisen’s main armament comprises eight 410 mm guns housed in four turrets. These guns share similar characteristics to Izumo’s, retaining the great AP penetration, and good ballistics and accuracy. Due to these traits, her AP should be the primary choice for captains. Her HE shells have standard characteristics for her caliber, and captains should only use them against destroyers or heavily angled battleships. Although she loses one barrel compared to Izumo, she has an improved reload of 27 s, allowing her to fire more frequently. She also boasts slightly better sigma over Izumo, further increasing her accuracy. Her guns have a good firing range of 20.6 km, which can be further increased for long periods of time with her unique Spotting AircraftWhile active, a spotter plane circles the ship enhancing main battery firing range.. Daisen has a fast turret traverse speed of 35 seconds, and good firing angles, which allow her to minimize the damage she takes when bringing her guns to bear.

Daisen sports a rather heavy secondary battery, consisting of sixteen 140 mm guns in single castemates, and ten 127 mm guns in double mounts. Her secondaries have improved accuracy, similar to that of German battleships. While their DPM is high, Daisen’s armor scheme and health do not allow her to make effective use of them, limiting them to self-defense. Captains should not actively seek to use Daisen’s secondaries or build for them.

Daisen also carries torpedoes, with two quadruple launchers on each side. Her torpedoes have a 10 km range, and the classic Japanese traits of high damage and flooding chance. In most situations, captains won’t find themselves using Daisen’s torpedoes as she prefers mid- to long-range engagements. If forced into a brawl, or if enemy ships are closing the distance while she is kiting, they can still be useful. In either situation, however, Daisen has to expose much of her broadside to get all eight torpedoes off.

Daisen’s AA defenses are mediocre. While her DPS values across the board are not terrible, they are not enough to prevent aircraft carriers from getting multiple strikes off. Her flak is decent, producing 6 clouds, but their damage is not impressive. If captains need protection against enemy aircraft, they should seek allied AA.

Daisen carries standard Depth Charge Airstrikes for a Tier IX battleship. She has two charges with a 10 km range and 30 second reload. Each charge has one aircraft armed with two bombs that deal up to 4,200 damage each. Captains should make active use of this armament whenever there are signs of a submarine's presence nearby, such as fuel spills and sonar pings.

Consumables

Daisen carries a Damage Control PartyWhen activated, instantly repairs fires, floods, and incapacitations, and prevents more for the duration. and Repair PartyWhile active, restores a percentage of the ship's health points each second.. The latter has one less charge than normal, reducing her total healing potential. She also carries a unique Spotting AircraftWhile active, a spotter plane circles the ship enhancing main battery firing range., with a 240 s duration and a quick reload time of 90 s. This allows her to maintain consistent long-range fire with little downtime, but comes at the price of one less charge. The Spotter is in the same slot as her Catapult FighterWhile active, a group of fighter planes circles the ship providing protection by attacking incoming enemy aircraft., and captains should opt to use the former at all times.

Gameplay

Due to her large size and good accuracy, Daisen prefers to stay at mid to long range. In the early game, captains should take a central position and look to establish crossfires between themselves and allied ships. Daisen’s gun parameters and Spotting Aircraft mean that she is quite comfortable at punishing both enemy battleships and cruisers from these ranges. Should a situation arise where she needs to change positions, her excellent speed allows her to quickly take up new positions wherever she is needed.

Daisen’s combination of both Japanese battleship and battlecruiser traits make her a unique ship, with a gameplay previously unheard of for Japanese battleships. Captains who are fans of both types will find her to be a great ship, with her blend of characteristics opening up new gameplay opportunities.

Pros:

  • Great torpedo belt protection
  • Accurate main battery with a fast reload
  • AP shells have high penetration
  • Extensive secondary battery with improved accuracy
  • Large amount of torpedoes, with have high damage and flooding chance
  • High speed
  • Spotting AircraftWhile active, a spotter plane circles the ship enhancing main battery firing range. consumable with long duration and short cooldown
