Monarch — British Tier VIII battleship.

One of the preliminary versions of the King George V-class ships armed with 381 mm main battery guns. She had features characteristic of a next-generation battleship, namely relatively high speed, thick horizontal armor, and dual-purpose artillery.

Player Opinion

The Monarch plays much like the King George V a tier below, with noticeable differences being the larger caliber of her guns, and a better armor scheme.

Unlike the King George V with her ten 14 inch guns, the Monarch gains access to a more competitive caliber of 15 inches. She has a total of nine guns in three turrets. Her guns reload in 25 seconds, one second faster than even the Bismarck with her eight 15 inch guns. However, the Monarch's secondary battery leaves something to be desired, unlike her German peer. It isn't anything worth investing points in. The same story is repeated with her Anti-Aircraft guns, which are somewhat limited by their range. Monarch won't be able to deter determined air strikes on her own, especially from equal tiered Aircraft Carriers or higher. Out of all the tier 8 battleships, Monarch also has the least health, lagging behind her contemporaries by a good six thousand hit points or more. She also has a large superstructure which is easy to hit with high explosive shells. This ship is more akin to a butterfly than royalty, and should seek to avoid the limelight. Her health and squishy superstructure means that the Monarch does not take hits very well, and should not attempt to tank damage.

As was stated, the Monarch's guns can stack up damage rather well, though don't count on racking up citadels on enemy battleships. The comparatively lower caliber of Monarch's guns (15 inches vs. 16 inches found on North Carolina and Amagi hurts her penetration against contemporary battleships. Instead of shooting at their waterlines, shift your aim a little higher in order to strike an enemy battleship above their main belt armor. Unfortunately, her main guns can only reach out to a range of 18.15 kilometres. It is a good thing she has access to the Spotting Aircraft consumable., which can extend her range out by 20%, for a short time.

It is not the Monarch's guns that make her fearsome, however. Fully kitted out in a concealment build, the Monarch can have a detection range of 10.9 kilometres, making her the stealthiest battleship in her tier spread.

So, yeah. It's a bit of a big deal.

This concealment mitigates her relative fragility, and the limited range of her main guns. It allows Monarch to control her engagements to a higher degree, and run away when needed. All in all, this is what makes Monarch unique. It turns an otherwise average and uninspiring battleship into one that can move around the match with a great degree of flexibility.

  • Accurate main armament.
  • Good belt armor.
  • Gun's reload in 25 seconds.
  • Good short range AA.
  • Best in class concealment.

  • Squishy superstructure.
  • 15 inch guns don't quite have the punch desired.
  • AA doesn't extend very far.
  • Relatively small health pool.
  • Bad angles on her #3 turret.

Prioritise Monarch's Fire Control Systems first, getting rid of that 16.5km stock range. Then, take her hull upgrade for an extra 7000 health and better rudder shift time. Or, if you feel comfortable with her stock range, grab the hull upgrade first for the health and maneuverability.

Save the propulsion upgrade for last.

Optimal Configuration

  • Slot 1 - Main Armaments Modification 1: As your damage ability hinges on the main batteries, keeping them in the game is vital. This upgrade ensures that they have more survivability, and won't be easily knocked out.
  • Slot 2 - Damage Control System Modification 1: While this module slot in general doesn't offer much usability for Monarch, the Damage Control Modification will go some way towards mitigating fire and torpedo damage.
  • Slot 3 - Aiming Systems Modification 1: While AA Guns Modification 2 is certainly a viable alternative, the ability to put shots downrange more accurately is always usable and certainly very helpful.
  • Slot 4 - Damage Control Systems Modification 2: Like Damage Control Modification 1, this upgrade goes a long way towards reducing the amount of fire and flooding damage taken.
  • Slot 5 - Concealment System Modification 1: The benefits of this modification are fairly obvious. Using it with the Concealment Expert captain skill brings the Monarch down to a 10.9 km detection range, allowing her to outspot many Cruisers in her tier spread and all Battleships.

Commander Skills

Monarch has a fairly standard consumable fare. It's recommended to equip the premium versions of your Damage Control Party and Repair Party, as to maximise survivability. Then, you have a choice between a Spotting Aircraft or Catapult Fighter, of which the former is more effective, due to the limited main battery range of Monarch.

Standard choice here. The Type 5 is always a good idea, with concealment bonuses and enemy dispersion debuffs.
